RadioShack Associate here, ask away your questions about pre-ordering & price details

I'm stoked! I've got a pretty solid plan that has me hitting RS and Sprint stores (5 stores within about a 20 mile radius) and each opening anywhere from 6-10 AM. Between 5 stores, I should be golden. Hell... I'm camping out at the 1st RS. Come hell or high water... I'm getting that EVO!

However... One RS said it wouldn't even be worth it to come in Friday. Not sure what SHE meant by that. I guess they only got enough to fill pre-order units. Then I called a mall RS earlier and talked to a guy who said that since I missed the pre-order, I could come get on a reservation list if I come in person. Got there after work and the manager was like hell-to-the-naw. Sucks, but wasn't a complete waste. BB next door had a demo unit. Sales dude also said that accessories were in, but wouldn't be out until Friday. I could see where they were keeping about 40 EVOs out on the floor locked in drawers. I'm not afraid to say I got a chubby while standing there. :)

didn't know where else to ask:

i have 2 pre-orders; 1 at RS, the other at BB. so far, the plan is to go to RS on friday. it's closer and i like the $20 thing.

my thought now is, can i use the other pre-order to get the evo for my wife? she's due for an upgrade and she has an instinkt now. can i use that pre-order to upgrade a different number than the one i reserved it for?

i'm not sure how much she'd appreciate it; she doesn't care too much for that stuff and hates it when i spend money, but video chat would be cool. right?

i wouldnt have a problem with it, just say "i think im gonna use my wifes line instead". its still leaving the store with you. and you could even try asking if they have extras. even though you pre-ordered one doesnt mean you cant buy an extra one also if they have them.

jeez.. RS is making such a big deal about setting up the phone upon purchase.. wanted to get in and out asap and dude was like "you have to understand we got to do hardware stuff and software stuff".. stuff u cant do at home..blah blah blah.. need atleast 35-45 mins to set me up "right".. really? jeez

I worry about this too, especially with this strange "appointment" system. Can't they just scan the box to activate it and let me leave? It's gotta take like 5 minutes, tops.

This very reason is why I'm going to use the pre-order I did at best buy. I did both the Shack and BB to play it safe. However Radio Shack (this one) sounds like they Just Have no idea what's going on. And I have had enough phones to know, it's a pretty fast process, if you know what your doing. Regardless it's going to be really busy where ever you go that day. I just like the fact that the girl from BB set up my appt with no problem, said I just tell the Manager who I am, cause he will be handling the line, show him my pre-order receipt, he'll check the appt list, and that the next available rep will grab me and get me out as soon as they can. Nothing goes that smooth, but hey wishfull thinking!

FIRST POST ALERT

This is my first smart phone. I have a 7:00 AM apt at RS to pick up my pre ordered EVO. They will give me the option of $US499 with no contract or $US199 with contract. Since I need a contract anyway getting the $US199 seems like the best option.

Going with Sprint probably means I activate at RS on 4 June and then call up Sprint and ask for activation fee waver and EVP or CU discount; and hope for $US10 per month discount since 4g will not be close to me for years.

Seems like RS will not have a good accessories selection on 4 June, so not sure what to do about case, screen protector, and other stuff.

There may be other issues as well that I missed or do not know about.

Any tips, comments, hints, or bashing welcome.

Hey DUbious,

I'm going tomorrow morning to pick up my phone at RS. Do I have to know my Sprint PIN to upgrade? I know my security question but not my PIN. Is this going to be a problem?

If you know your security question and answer you should be fine. At least that's what I was told at my RS when I pre-ordered. And I'm not yet a customer for Sprint until I get the handset in my hands/sign.

I don't know. BB's are always so crowded which is why I decided on one of the smaller RS in my area. I avoided the mall RS. I'm hoping that way the process will be slick.

Though, I haven't been called yet.

First, are you new to America? Just curious...

As for your other points - if you're a Sprint | Premier customer, you pay no activation fee. But you said "going with Sprint" which suggests that you'll be a new customer. That means you are not eligible for having the activation fee waived. What makes you think you're entitled to that? You can ask...and you might get it...but you do not actually qualify for it, so don't get upset if it doesn't happen. As for Credit Union discounts, I'm not sure if RS can handle that or not. You can ask. If they can't, and you are a member of a CU, call Sprint and they'll set up your discount.

Ugh...accessories. RS has really disapointed here. From what I've heard they'll have next to nothing. I plan on checking out the Sprint store after I pick up my EVO at RS to see what they have available.

Maybe they can call Sprint to verify?

Yeah, BB is always crowded here too...and the mobile dept. is always under staffed. I still haven't gotten a call for my RS pre-order either...im not worried, though. The lame thing is I went to a mall store before knowing about the 6am openings...so I'll be there a lil after 10am...and since I have my receipt and gift card I should be good. :)

Not new to US, but have never had a cell phone before.

I have read several posts about how a call to Sprint could get the activation fee waived. A good friend of mine has been with Sprint for years and said it is a common practice for Sprint to waive the fee for almost everyone that asks for it to be waived.

Many posts here and at other web sites give the impression Sprint has the power to waive or discount many charges. Getting upset is not really my style, I am just looking for the lowest cost.

I will check out the Sprint store for accessories.

^ I only asked if you were new to America because you typed "$US10" and "4 June"...like they do over in Europe. :)

You're free to ask/demand any discount you can think of...but you really aren't eligible for any. For that reason, be prepared to be denied discounts. But like you've heard, there are lots of people that demand discounts and many of them receive them whether they actually qualify or not, so good luck to you. I've never called in to demand an activation fee waived, but like said - it's worth a try.

Question for RS rep:

1. We are going to add a line on my family plan, which is under my father's name. I'm assuming that my dad has to come in with me to the store as well? I'm not a minor and I have the security password for our family plan.

2. We have a EPRP (EVerything Plus Referral Plan) plan. Will that be ok with RS?

Thanks.
