Plastic Earbuds + Incredible + pocket = SCRATCHES on the screen!! Im pissed!

When the Verizon Holster windshield mount came out, several people talked about a major design flaw because the screen faced out when using it as a holster. Today I attended a Cystic Fibrosis walk and brought my ear-buds along to listen to Pandora on the walk. The holster was perfect holding the Incredible inside my pocket with the clip clipped to the top of my front pants pocket which kept the cord from going inside with the phone screen. Nobody said you have to wear the holster outside of your clothing to be useful.

Have no sympathy for the OP who should have known better. Not knowing what your pocket looks like, how much you weigh, etc - It's a bad idea either way you look at it. I wouldn't do it WITH a screen protector as you never know when you are going to press something against the screen so hard that it does some other damage....

I had my un-protected phone in an empty pocket of my jeans and it got scratched.
Your pants weren't completely empty then, maybe you can wash you pants with the pockets out because i'm pretty sure if you walk out side get a little dirt in your hand and rub it against your screen, it would possible scratch, and seeing how dirt is everywhere, i would be hard pressed to believe you had dirt or small rocks in your pocket

Exactly.

These claims of it being scratched by plastic earbuds or being scratched in "empty" pockets are ridiculous.

The screen is glass. There are varying levels of hardness when it comes to glass, but it's a pretty hard substance and it requires something hard in order to scratch it. That's not plastic or your pocket lining.

Actually, now that I've looked at the original picture in this thread, I wouldn't be surprised if that was some material that had rubbed off on the screen and would come off with some buffing compound. The material may feel "ridged" but may not actually be scratching the screen.

The reality is that, in order to scratch glass, you need a material that is harder than the glass. Some types of metal and some types of minerals will do that - but plastic headphones and pocket linings will not. Glass is not all that easy to scratch.

All of this nonsense is simply spreading FUD about the screens. If you scratched your screen, it's because it got rubbed against something pretty hard, not because you were carrying it along in a protected environment and something soft got pressed up against it.

As crazy as it sounds, I had almost the same situation happen. Before going to the gym, no scratches. I must have put my iPod headphones in my pocket with my phone, got the gym, 4 really small scratches. They are hard to see a lot of the times but in some light they stand out and can be felt with your fingernail.

I was surprised to see this happen.

So much for a scratch resistant screen. The videos you see of "scratch tests" with keys and scissors are B.S. because they don't even put an ounce of presure on the screen. I have learned the hard way!

When my dinc was declared faulty by verizon and they said that they were going to send me out a new one, one of the first things i did was take off the screen protector and try to scratch the screen

I took my sharpest key and pressed hard down and rubbed on it for 5 minutes, i then took a safety pin and did the same thing dropped about $5 of change on it and then took a serrated kitchen knife and did everything i could to scratch it. At first I was excited that I could bring some proof to this forum but after I whiped the screen down it was still like new. No scratches. After doing some research I found out that even though those sharp objects seem like they would scratch glass they wont scratch the incredible.
Yes they are sharp but that doesnt matter its the hardness factor we are looking for. Metal is softer than glass so those scratch test videos are just bs to impress you.
My guess is you had something in your pocket like sand or dirt which has a hardness factor higher than the incred glass and that your headphones werent the cause of the scratch.

I got a scratch the 2nd day I had mind. Next day, I put on a screen protector. Having it in your pockets with keys/usb sticks, you will get scratches.

So Ive been carrying around my Inc. naked while I waited for a screen protector I ordered on ebay. I use my Inc. as my primary MP3 player and always carry around earbuds with me. Well one day walking to work I put the earbuds (which are made of PLASTIC and the head phone jack is nice and smooth metal with no sharp edges) and Inc in the same some what loose pants pocket (not jeans). When I arrived at work THIS IS WHAT I HAD IN STORE FOR ME!!!!!

Yes my friends SCUFF marks and SCRATCHES on my screen! At first I thought this MUST be just some kind of residue and that I could wipe it off until I stared to run my finger nail over them and felt the slight grip of tiny scratches.

I mean this is really shocking to me because at NO time did I feel that there was any slightest rubbing of the phone when in my pocket.

IM PISSED!!!!!

and you didnt apply a screen protector why?

That's why you should invest in a screen protector as soon as you get a smartphone.

I still don't understand why folks don't protect their screen than complain when it gets scratched. As soon as I got my phone I put on a screen protector and now have a Seidio case and holster for added protection. I can put my phone anywhere without worry of it getting scratched which makes me breath easier. I'd hate to have to live with a phone for two years that's scratched up because I didn't protect it.

Just my $.02
