Real talk: I'm going to return my Evo

As a new Android user/smartphone owner, it's an adjustment... Like, it's weird that I can watch movies, play music, use my phone for data entry at work, talk on it, find what I want to order for dinner, call for the delivery of dinner, text my friends, play with an Step Brothers sound board while getting the election results and the weather without using 5 other devices.

My crappy Katana DLX's Battery would die if I left it in my locker at work because it was searching for a signal for 8 hrs a day, my ipod would die in under 4 hours playing music, and my laptop dies if I don't hold the power adapter at an angle. (the Battery is on it's last leg). Yet, am I ready to "aw screw it, these devices suck! I'm buying a new one!" No, I had to actually remember charge it (or heaven forbid if you are not using it turn it off), order a new battery or stop fussing with it every 2 seconds.

And to the iPhone users, my brother's 3gs can not make it through a 4 and 1/2 hour shift at work. He normally has to charge it as soon as he comes in the door. Yet, some how his battery is so much better than my EVO's which handled a full day at work, a 45 min phone call, 4 hours of work related web browsing, 8 app downloads, filming a 3 min video, watching 4 hq youtube clips, and 25 mins of playing with app soundboards. With 30% battery to spare, but yeah the iphone battery is SOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!

Sorry to rant but it had to be done!

you guys are just glazing over the problem with bandaid fixes. The phone should be getting better battery life than it is.

I think the theory that some one mentioned about me having poor battery life due to weak signal is pretty astute, i hadn't thought of that. It makes sense, though.

As much as i love the android os, and how badly i wanted the evo, i just can't get be running out of battery at 4-5pm. My wife had the same problem with her evo and it sits idle 6-7 hours in a locker at her work each day (no phone policy). Unacceptable.

Meanwhile, i reactivated my 2 year old iphone 3g which was sitting on a shelf since friday and it has 30% battery left. It wasn't off or charged, it was just sitting there with "no service" displayed if you woke it up. Bluetooth, wifi, etc all enabled. I can count on the iphone (and all my other past phones) to work throughout the day, yet friday, saturday, sunday, and today the evo ran out of steam and fell short. I'd have kept it if i could make it home with more then 20% left, but i couldn't. :(

plug it in!

Hmm, my Blackberry Bold 9700's battery seems to die quicker than the Evo's.

My old curve 8330m got worse battery life then my new evo is getting. I had 2 brand new batteries and I had to swap them at least once every day at work, and that's after letting it charge all night. I'm not sure why some people are having such horrible issues. Are you using the live backgrounds?

I don't understand the battery complaints.

The phone has a 4.3" screen. That alone probably takes some juice to power. Now throw in the capabilities this phone has when it comes to data usage and web usage....that takes more power. 1ghz Processor. We can go on and on and you can see this phone just needs some juice.

It is like comparing a Hybrid Prius with a Lexus IS-F. One is going to use A LOT more juice because of the increased performance.

If you don't want an extended battery or have a 2nd battery on hand then you need to be in a situation where you can plug it in during the day. Be it the car or at your work.

Luckily I can make sure the phone is 100% charged prior to leaving my office at night and it'll be fine until I go to bed where it will be put on the charger until the morning.

Another thing to remember is battery performance usually gets better after a new phone is a week or so old. Every smartphone i've ever owned has always improved after a few weeks.

I don't know what the F you guys are doing with your phones. I left for work at 6:45am this morning at 100%. Had 3G, BT, GPS, and WifI on all day. I sent about 15-20 texts, surf some, downloaded 2 apps from market, made about 7-8 short phone calls (5-10min), did one 3-5min Fring session with my wife to Skype during lunch and now I'm sitting at home with the phone battery level clocking in at exactly 25%.

Phone was not plugged in one time all day.

Well, you don't cite the 'now' time (5p, 10p, ?) but in either case I think that's poor. Just me I guess.

I started my phone at 7AM and it latest almost until 5:30 pm and I am happy. I was on 3g internet for at least two hours in the morning. In the afternoon used another hour at least, then watched a whole movie I put on the sd. I then downloaded a bunch of new apps. I am addicted to the device so there is not 30 min without me turning it on to call or use in some way.

I understand for some on here it is not enough or doesn't compare favorably to your iphone. There are several battery threads. Try them, or take the phone back, and I am sorry for your loss, because you obviously had high hopes for the phone or you wouldn't have bought it. I know somebody else who has to return theirs for signal issues, and they spent a lot of time and money setting the phone up.

I think many on this thread just want to argue. If you think the thread is lame don't post. If you are dissatisfied with the phone and it can't be resolved take it back and move on.

Since release there have been too many threads about this stuff and not enough attention to helping one another get the most out of a device that we have all waited for so long. While I believe it is everyone's right to participate in this forum and engage in threads like this, it just doesn't seem like the same forum I joined before release where people like bek and others where doing extensive testing and review, helping us all to understand the phone we now have.:D

Yeah I guess it is hard for me to understand when my evo gets great battery life. Bluetooth Pandora back and forth to work 45 minutes each way, about 2-3 hours of WiFi browser surfing, countless texts and phone calls. I have downloaded at least one app. a day, usually many more, random calculator, searches, constantly checking my 2 gmail accounts. All that and it comes off the charger at 7am and goes back on at 11pm at about 15-20%.
Maybe you have a bad battery, or maybe the coverage sucks in your area. Either way, a couple of you guys are just complaining to complain. If you want to go back to your iphones, just go, it's a cool phone too.

What these "iphone has better battery life" people fail to realize is that many of us android users started out as iphone users. I had the cydia app store when apple wouldnt allow apps. I had every generation of iphone that came out. So i know more about that phone than i should. And 1 thing i know about the phone is that it has bad battery life. There is a reason i had to have so many chargers. All touch screen smartphones are right around the same in battery life. If you cant make it through the day with an EVO then you cant make it through the day with an iphone. Its just the way it is. Go to an iphone forum and hear new users ask about bettery life. Its the same.

Now i still have my Hero and my coworker still has a 3gs iphone. By lunch each day his battery is about 40% left and my battery is about 80% left.

If you dont like charging your phone. If you refuse to carry an extra battery when you know you will be gone for a long time..... Then go buy a flip phone or a blackberry. Not an EVO, not an Iphone.

Its like buying a Hummer and complaining because its not getting Prius mpgs. Its stupid.

Yea, they built a superphone.

Why didn't they build a super battery to go with it?

Seriously, this phone is so much more advanced than the hero, but uses the same battery?

Remember the Q9c? Remember the huge battery it had?

Such an advanced phone should not require you to swap out batteries

You can't possibly be this shortsighted.

Every single smartphone there is has pretty "bad" battery life. You are basically carrying a small laptop in your pocket and 8-10 hours battery life with medium usage is BAD to you??

Most of my coworkers and friends use iPhone 3Gs and 3GS' and their phones die long before my Evo, they always complain about batteries...but the iPhone is so "advanced" that you CANT replace the battery. You HAVE to charge for hours just to use it again.

Fail.
