LOVE my Evo, but...

So I really do love my Evo, but my only gripe is HTC Sense. I feel like it makes my phone extremely laggy. When I browse through my contacts, or text messages it feels extremely laggy. I am telling myself that the Froyo port will hopfully fix this annoyance for me.

If not, is rooting and installing a custom rom my best option? Are their any roms out that support all the features of the Evo like front facing camera, voice to text, and all that other good stuff?

Are you sure HTC Sense is the cause of the problem and not simply a symptom? A lot of people, myself included, find the Sense UI to be quick and responsive. You might want to look into the possibility that there's some other app running the background that's stealing clock cycles and causing the UI to be laggy.

are you running a task killer? killing those tasks means you have to re-load them when you do certain things. I only ever killed the tasks that I NEVER use. facebook, gmail, etc i would leave on because i use them.

It didn't help the battery out at all, but it did feel snappy. I did have issue with the keyboard though. I felt like it couldn't keep up with me. I would have it miss letters when typing with both thumbs.

There is only one ROM out for the EVO right now and it is DEV version of the Froyo port that lacks Sense. There are likely way more to come in the coming weeks so watch the XDA forums. You sound like a great candidate for an AOSP ROM once someone gets it fully ported to the EVO.

In the meantime, turn off animations, haptic feedback and live wallpapers and that will speed up your phone a little bit more.

  • Froyo is blazing fast.
  • Go to Settings / Applications / Manage applications / HTC Sense - Clear data and defaults and then press the home button. Click on the checkmark to make your selection default and select "Home" I think it is. Either way, select whatever option is available other then Sense.
After disabling sense, memory allocation seems to be more efficient, or maybe it's all in my head. At any rate, it should run better by disabling it.
