why do you need a screen protector?

Not necessarily. A touch screen phone can develop fines scratches with use and not function properly anymore. I had it happen to my last phone. I'm fussy about keeping a screen protector on now. It's worth the couple bucks.

When I was younger I used to think that was true... the first car I bought was a used car with really dark tinted windows... I peeled the tint of the front windows and then used a brillo pad to remove the glue on the drivers side window... moral of the story... Dont use a stupid brillo pad to remove tint glue!!!

I think it is reasonable to assume that unless you are trying to put scratches on your glass screen then you will likely not get any scratches on it.
However, that is not to say that glass cannot be scratched...just that it would almost seem that to scratch it, you would have to be trying to scratch it.
If you take any kind of care with your device at all, you should not have to worry about scratching it.

but the one time you drop it onto sand... or asphalt or gravel... scratchity scratch.
Also, many screen protectors have the added benefit of reducing the amount of smudging you get on the touchscreen during use. That alone is enough of a reason for me to use one.

This is almost impossible when you live at the beach... sand seems to just stay in your pockets at all times... sand + glass + friction =

Here is a rating of hardness on the MOH scale.
1 Talc
2 Gypsum (fingernail at 2.5)
3 Calcite (copper - old penny at 3.5)
4 Fluorite
5 Apatite (window glass or typical knife blade at under 5.5)
6 Orthoclase (good steel file at over 6.5)
7 Quartz
8 Topaz
9 Corundum (sapphire, ruby)
10 Diamond
So depending on the type of glass, it doesn't mean that only a Diamond will scratch it. I own a watch that has a sapphire crystal glass front and that thing is pretty much scratch proof.
The glass on the EVO 4G on the other hand...well is not.

I need to get one for mine. I got the Zagg from Radio Shack but have yet to put it on. I purchased the last Evo at Best Buy yesterday for my girlfriend and made her put one on. I'm paranoid she'll scratch it while it's in her purse. I wasn't thrilled with how it felt after they put it on, I'll check it out tonight when she's home from work to see if it gt better after 24 hours. It felt too "sticky" for me.

The Zagg ones are a bit "sticky" but if you can get most of the oil off your finger it's much better.

When I bought my first gen iphone back in the day (has it really been that long?) everyone was saying that the glass isn't going to scratch and a screen protector was worthless. I took extra care anyway to only put it in my pocket without change or keys. I have absolutely no idea how it happened but one day I looked at it and BAM, there were not one but two scratches etched right into the glass. I ended up getting lucky (touch screen stopped working) and got a new iphone replacement. Needless to say I immediately put a case and screen protector on it after that.
It's really about piece of mind. With a rubber case and screen protector on my iphone I stopped worrying about it and a year and a half later it still looked brand new.

The night I bought the Evo I had a nightmare that I scratched the screen up beyond belief. For me, peace of mind alone I is worth it. My protector is from Clarivue. It looks and feels just like the screen itself, comes off and on if I want it to, and doesn't leave any residue. They're extremely cheap vs the cost of the phone, so why not?

Yes, when it is 1st put on it is sticky & u have 2 be careful with it till it drys. But after it drys its fine. I used 2 scratch my phones all 2 crap n my purse. My boyfriend used 2 scratch his with his keys n the same pocket. His favorite abuse tactic with his phone though is 2 have it n his lap while driving & then when he goes 2 get out of the car his pants make his phone pop n2 the air & land n the parking lot. The Zagg shield is our new best friend. We have it on both of our droids, both of our i-pod touches & his macbook pro. We usually just pay them 2 put it on for us, that way if they mess up we don't have 2 pay 4 another 1 to get it right. Its not that expensive & worth it 2 not have 2 deal with it.

WOW... that's hilarious! I'm not tryin 2 b mean but I got an awesome laugh off this 1! I think the trick u r thinking of is the test 2 see if a gem is a real diamond or not. If it cuts the glass then its a diamond. But no, it doesn't take a diamond 2 cut glass.

By the way, I have tested and confirmed that the screen doesn't get scratched by razor blades... however, sandpaper (the Titanium Nitride paper I use for removing oxidation from Nickel super-alloy sensors) was able to lightly scratch the screen when used in conjunction with about 100lbs of force. Only while wetsanding though... it wouldn't scratch it dry.

Better safe than sorry. My hero never had a protector on it and had no scratches at all but with the Evo I find myself treating it a little too well. I just ordered a protector just in case. Scratches are probably the worst thing to look at on a phone. Especially if they are deep and can be seen while the screen is on. Protectors are cheap so I think it's worth it, regardless of how hard it is to scratch

I just got my Evo on Thursday, and 3 minutes after it was activated I applied a Seidio screen protector. The next day I was at work and I must have had a piece of metal filing in my finger or something as the screen protector has a scratch in it. One day, one scratch. Worth $10 IMO to have that scratch in the screen protector and not on the screen.

The screen protector got a scratch in it because it hadn't "cured" yet. I had the same thing happen to the Phantom Skinz that I had on my phone. That's why some people let it sit for a full 24 hours before touching it.
Anyway, I took the screen protector off & I plan on keeping it that way. I think that the video of the Evo with the keys, razor blades, etc should be enough piece of mind...

Since most phones, including the Evo, don't come with specialized, hardened glass, adding a protector makes sense. For phones that have specialized glass (like Gorilla glass or iPhone 4 glass), protection's less a necessity and more of an added layer of protection.
I protect all my screens. I've never had a handheld device without screen protection and never had any of them get scratched/damaged because they have all been covered.
