How is everyone's battery life with the CM ROM? I turned off Wifi yesterday and noticed extremely good battery life (at midnight I had around 75% charge after being unplugged since 8 am or so).

It seems like my battery is draining much quicker with Wifi enabled than before. Could this be due to using the Dream radio instead of the Magic radio?

I wouldn't claim that the battery life is great but it is just good enough to top it up when I get to a pc with the usb cable. I can go all day with normal use and wifi but do have to charge every day. The speed increase over stock and the improved functionality makes it worthwhile. The kernels should get better when we get to see the official htc kernels with native drivers. Eventually we'll go back to the new radios. Hopefully htc will stop being so tight with their drivers/code and just make it better and not worry about their customers using the devices as designed.

I've configured the End button via Spare Parts to go to sleep and that seems to have made a difference. I don't see much battery drain when the phone isn't on and Wifi is enabled.

I'm so impressed with what a difference this ROM makes! I'm running CM 5.0.8 test1 and my phone is WAY snappier than with the post 911 Sense ROM! Market downloads start right away now whereas before they took forever to start. Aldiko (eBook reader) is significantly faster at loading books which is quite interesting as I'm not overclocking.

Looks like you've gotten the Rogers RUU flashed onto your magic. You just need to continue on from that point. Install flashrec.apk and use it to replace your recovery. Check the file name according to my guide to make sure that you are flashing the correct one.

If you've flashed the wrong recovery and can't access it. Just reapply the Rogers RUU, and go through the procedure from that point again.

thats the thing after i install the rogers ruu i cant access the recovery menu ..and i cant install flashrec because i cant sign into google in order to download astro..if i install flashrec using the adb commands on my pc, wont the fact that i cant access the recovery menu cause me problems further on?

EDIT: Finally got it thanks for everyones help especially gbd for the tutorial...but i still cant sign in to google :/ anyone else have this problem by any chance?

well i figured out why i cant login to google..turkish government (where i am right now) has blocked some ip's belonging to google..this affects gmail google maps and the market on the android system..awesome i now have a useless phone..

edit: turkish hackers have found a way around it..

They block google IPs in Turkey? wow, that's rotten, what a world. Do the local providers sell Android devices? How do they handle the blockage if that is true?

As for recovery mode, you won't see it after flashing an official RUU. That's what the next steps are about.

google isnt actually blocked just several ip's belonging to google which block google analytics and something else to do with ads..their argument is that theyre making money from these ads etc. in turkey without paying any taxes..we also have youtube and 'other' streaming sites blocked but there are simple settings that allows people to by-pass them..luckily i rooted my phone or else I wouldve been stuck with no gmail market etc.

theres only one android phone available in turkey right now..its a samsung i7500 (or something like that) running 1.5..the whole blocking of ip's thing happened a few days ago so im not sure what the telecom company is going to do about it..i doubt they'd care Ive yet to see one person with that phone so they'll most likely pull it from the stores..

also ive got my phone running on 2.1 now :)..quick question if/when cyanogen release an update how does it work..i hope i dont have to go through all those steps again or is it a lot simpler?

That's a new one and sillier than blocking on so called moral grounds. Imagine if google had to pay taxes to every country in addition to the taxes I'm sure they already pay from their local offices in each country? They would have to track every page hit from there and calculate the revenue. Just about every commercial website sells ads, that's how we can use them for free.

It's alot simpler when your already on it. One of two things will occur depending on how the update is made.

1- If it's based on another build it usually requires a full wipe before you flash the new version.

2- If It still uses the same base then you only need to flash the update file.

Always check the first post of the rom thread, that's were all the info is located. It tells you if it's a major upgrade (wipe) or just a update (no wipe).

Thanks for all the work on this everyone.

I have a few questions before I go on. I don't expect a definitive answer, but maybe someone knows something.

I have a Magic with the 911 update that I have unlocked and am now running on Telus. I'm actually pretty happy with Sense on 1.5, but there are a few things that I miss from running CM on my old Dream (google goggles and vpn)

One thing that I absolutely cannot lose when going to a custom ROM is full ActiveSync support. The company thinks they're paying for me to use the blackberry that's sitting in my drawer so they'll get a little upset if I can no longer get my email and calendar. Do the CM 2.1 ROMs have ActiveSync or should I just wait for CM put out a Froyo ROM?

Also, since I'm not running on Rogers, does anyone have a thought on what I can do with radios? Can I run some of the ROMs out there without the Rogers kernel or is it hardware, rather than network dependent? If I do have to keep a rogers radio and I don't have to worry about waivers and data being cutoff with Telus, should I stick with the pre 911 magic radio or the new dream version?

TIA

Wow, I didn't even realize we could use our Magics on Telus, very cool. I would suspect you could use any radio you want but have no experience in the matter.

The CM 2.1 ROM has ActiveSync Email and Contact support but no Calendar support. I've worked around this by installing Google Calendar Sync on my desktop. This works fine from me but the Calendar support in the 1.5 ROM's was better.

You can but won't recommend unless your a l33t h@ck3r and trive in linux land ;) . There's alot of task killing software around in the market but know that killing some apps while cripple functionalities (ex: killing Clock process will kill your alarm clock as it's part of the same app).

What rom are you using ?
Did you wipe your battery stats in recovery after a full charge ?
Is bluetooth On (it's a battery drainer in many roms) ?

Yes wiping the stats helps recalibrate the battery display. It might just be that.

For the reboot part i find it weird... sounds like a bug or a bad flash. Did you check the md5sum of the zip before you wiped and install ?

i didnt check them i just downloaded everything on the list gbd provided..although i didnt get any error messages or anything in the process of rooting/flashing

whats the proper way of calibrating the battery? should i let it run out of juice completely then charge to 100% again or can i use the phone and it just does it itself over time?

Fully charge the phone, wipe the stats then let the phone run until it shuts off on it's own. Fully charge again

If you have AmonRA recovery installed, you should have a options to wipe battery stats. When the battery is full boot into recovery and choose that option then reboot and use your phone like you do usually.

alright ill give it a go thanks for the help guys

edit: is this something like where my phone displays the battery as full except its not actually full..is that whats going on with my phone right now?

Your fast drain is probably just the stats going berserk and that's why it dropped so fast. Charge it full and then wipe the stats and see if it helps.

All this talk about wiping the battery stats it sounds like I might be screwing myself with the way I charge my phone.

I have a spare battery on the charger and when the one in the phone dies I just swap them. So I guess I must be screwing up my battery stats?

But that being said my standby time is 2+ days, it cuts down to like 1 day or less if I am using it for games or updating/installing apps, phone calls ect...
