Root Anybody feel like helping an idiot root his eris?

Ok, to be honest, I think that you had better proceed with the SDK install on Windows XP. Based on your prompt, it looks like your Mac is an iBook G4, which does not have an Intel processor. The Mac version of the SDK, according to Google, only works with a Mac with an Intel processor (so that would be a Macbook, Macbook Pro, or an iMac or Mac Mini made since 2006.)

You're going to have to follow the instructions for installing the SDK on a Windows computer. XP should be fine; I understand that people with 64 bit Windows 7 have some problems.

[edit later]: That said, you have the proper root image on your SD card, so that's one thing checked off.

ahhh ok... that kinda sucks. i need a new laptop! haha

oh man, sorry about all of this. guess im going to start over on my wifes win. xp laptop.

You already have a root file that you know will work on the SD card, so at least that part is done. Honestly, getting that SDK installed and figured out seems to be the part that gets people the most.

I've been using computers since I had to program with card decks, and PCs since DOS 2.1. I've been using command prompts for a long, long time, and it's hard to remember sometime that there are lots of people who have never had to use a terminal window/DOS prompt/whatever you want to call it.

Once you are successfully communicating with the Eris using the adb command from a prompt, the rest will be easy.

it seems to be working for him. he is able to use the commands to find his md5 hash correctly.

Those commands aren't part of the Android SDK, though. Openssl is just a standard Unix app that comes with Mac OS X. The adb command that comes in the SDK zip file is compiled as Intel processor only, so it won't work on a PowerPC Mac, unfortunately.

ok, sdk is on her computer. now im stuck on step number 8

8. Right-click My Computer > Properties, and go to Device Manager. You should see a device with a yellow exclamation next to it, this is your phone (if you don't see it you probably forgot to enable USB debugging mode)

debugging is on and i dont see it. there is "android usb devices" is that it? under that is "my htc"

Did you follow the directions in step 5 to install the USB driver package?

It may be that you are all set. Again, doing this from Windows is something I have not done.

But it may be that you are all set. To check, have the Eris plugged in, do not mount the SD Card. Following the instructions by erisuser1 on this post:

Open up a "Command Window" by using the Windows Start Menu:

Start ... Run ... (then type in the little box "CMD", and hit enter)

A black-background command window will pop up.

The next thing to do is to Change Directories ("CD" command) to the tools folder of your android SDK

Type into that window the commands

c:
cd \
cd \Andro*

find the "tools" folder underneath there and "CD" to that. It might help to use Windows Explorer to find the tools folder, so that when you are typing in the name of that folder you know what you are looking for.

Findally, when the prompt shows that you are in the tools folder, the command prompt will look something like this:

C:\Android....blah...blah\tools> (or perhaps "C:\Android...blah...blah\Tools>" I'm not using a Windows box)

at that point you can try typing

adb devices

and you should get some output that shows your device identity (if your are connected)

If you see a string that starts with "HTA...", then so far so good.

If you do see success from the adb devices command, I think that you are ready to install the root image.

thanks, ill give it a shot.

no-idea (great username, btw). FYI, the Eris Master Application is still down (was pulled last weekend); the developers over at xda are working on a bug fix; I just checked the download area and its still not back up...just wanted to keep you (and others) from fruitlessly searching for it. I'm sure Eclips3 and Jamezelle will get it back as soon as they can. Good luck.
