Torn...EVO and iPad???

I think having both is a good decision. I am a former iphone owner who left apple because of he arrogance of the company. I didnt like them not letting me send mms without jailbraken my phone(which i did). I just got tired of every update coming out being about them making it easier for me to give them my money. Now i understand its a business and i respect that. But i feel that it should be a win win. I felt like apple wasnt doing enough free for all the things they were charging for.

But i have used the ipad every time i go to the mall and i will say its a cool gadget. Now its not a full computer, but how often on my full computer do i even fully compute vs internet use? Not much. And a i have a few computers.

If my laptop breaksdown on me instead of buying another i would consider an ipad.

But if money is not an issue and you can have both EVO and ipad then you are in good shape.

I use my phone to look things up and check a few sites throughout the day. And for that i dont think their is a better phone than evo. 4.3 inches is the perfect size. New iphone looks nice. But 3.5 inches is just too small.
And neither is worth really playing games on. App store may be better on apple. But how much time are you really going to spend playing a 3.5 inch video game when your fingers take up much of the screen. I dont get it.

Good points! Thanks!

I am not an apple fan either. I just got an phone less iPhone in Jan after the one i got my wife for Christmas (also a phone less iPhone) proved to be so bloddy cool in regards to showing off my photos (Index) and extensive list of apps. It is hard to deny the availability and ease of use of the app store. I hate iTunes, denied my wife and I an iPod of any sort for the longest time because of it.

Actually, my 17" laptop I used to use for the same 3-6 per night died a week after getting the wifi pad. I hadn't even turned it on In a week...went to try to use it and the logic board had died sitting there (pissed I guess). But i got real used to using the iPad exclusively once i got home from work. Hated to have to pay for e repair tothe fairly new laptop, but I do kind of need it for some business use.

Money is only an issue in the absence of value. If it will help simply life 1% I'll justify spending the money on it for sure.

If I had time to play games I suect this whole issue would be a non issue. With 4 jobs (school is out for summer so get a big reprieve from the main job) a pretty active hobby (photography), among other things, I stay too dang busy. Having said that, I did download a couple of games to show off! They are pretty cool!

Thanks again for the feedback!

I can tell you, it wont be long (if they are not already out there) before someone creates a iPad type of device for about 1/2 the cost of having Apples name on it, plus it will either run Android or Windows.
If its Android, then all those nice little apps we have on our Evos will run on a tablet device.
Hold off on the iPad. And this is coming from a guy who just sold his iPhone to get an Evo.

As a side note, it kills me to hear Macs dont crash, yet you go into the Apple store and the people are lined up to get the Macs fixed. And the fee for fixing them is more than a PC. At least I can goto Wal-Mart and buy any brand video card to fix a simple problem.

Not trying to hate on Apple or the iPad but I'd dump the iPad. My plan is to wait and get an Android based tablet (probably the NotionInk Adam shipping Q3 2010). You'll be able to pick up an Android tablet substantially cheaper than an Apple product (most likely) and you'll be able to keep all your devices in the same eco-system.

If you haven't seen the demo videos of the NotionInk, do a search and watch them.

I currently have a Palm centro with ok tethering through dial up (hey it works when there is no 3G).

Hi Lokerd,

So you're tethering your iPad with your Centro? Is this done via bluetooth, or are you using the ipad camera Connection kit?

I tried to connect my Evo to my iPad via bluetooth and successfully paired them. I can't get them to connect though. If I can get them to connect, will I then be able to use pdanet to tether?

I'd love to be able to use my Evo as a "hotspot" without having to pay $30/month. When I'm traveling I'd like to be able to use my iPad + Evo to email, surf, etc. I don't travel that much so I won't use the hotspot feature enough to pay the monthly fee.

I have both. when you discuss these two devices....you are talking about apples and oranges. the EVO will never be able to "replace" a laptop...the iPad comes close...and closer if you havethe right apps. the iPad will not be able compete with portability. if money is not an issue...why not have the best of both worlds! My computing habits definitely have changed since the iPad....the laptop definitely is not working as hard sits used to.

I have both as well. I'm an IT admin and have quick access to all the newest mobile devices, blackberry, iphone, androids phones, etc.

This is hard to admit, but I shelved my PC laptops in favor for the Ipad for the majority of email / browsing needs. I use the Cisco VPN to log into my servers and use the 'jump' RDP app to control my servers. The instant on / long battery life is great for quick checks on the systems, email, reading large technical docs via PDF format, etc.

The EVO is one of the nicest handsets we've come across, i'm still waiting for our VZ Incredible to arrive in our office since it's on backorder due to the display shortage. With Activesync, it's nice to have access to Exchange email and the browser is certainly better than our blackberries.

Obviously one fits in the pocket and is more portable, but I find myself carrying the Ipad around just about everywhere within reason in my office and much prefer the large screen for browsing / Email use.

perhaps you can find a way to have both if the budget allows. My ipad is the WIFI only version, I had a feeling AT&T was going to bait and switch on the unlimited data plan.

Sold my ipad this morning I was in love with until I got me evo. At first I was using the evo to tether then just for kicks I tried to load the same website on both. Every time the evo won the race sometimes by a large margin. Then when skyfire loaded a flash video it was over.

I kept thinking man this device cost a hundred dollars more than my phone doesn't have to worry about making calls and is still slower.

Still miss streaming netflix on it though, but macbook pro and evo fill the gap I never knew I needed until the iPad

Find the smallest cell phone you can "Sony Ericson T16" that will allow you to tether an external device and keep the iPad.

If you're with Apple better to stay with them or your investment goes down the drain. Why do you think so many people are still on Microsoft OS.

Oh and I was joking aout the SET16, I did that back in the day with my Ipaq. Ah the good old days.

That's exactly what I did.I'm typing this post on my evo enabled iPad right now. I really think the 2 combined are akin to pb&j. I love the evo but it's just a better experience having a full screen and keyboard to surf/type on.

My only concern is that when using the evo as a hotspot, and watching youtube vids on the iPad, there is considerable lag.. yet the evo plays them much faster. This is odd to me as they are next to each other. Moreover web pages and CNN video play fine...

Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated

Here are my two cents...

First, the iPad is really cool. Yes its bigger then an Evo, yes its limited and locked down more in its operating system then Android, and yes its APPLE. However it is still really awesome to have with you if you want to read a book or browse the net with out having to zoom in close to your phone and pinch and zoom etc. It is cool when you want to share reading, or watching a video with someone else on the go, such as a lady friend :) Chilling in the nice summer sun at the park and watching a movie with your lady friend is quite awesome. And for that matter anywhere with anyone, sharing the entertainment services you get on the iPad with others on the go is a lot nicer and convenient then and Evo. Its light, thin, and better than carrying a notebook computer. Comes in handy when you need to type up documents or letters or any kind of office applications.

Some say its a fad, as covert mentioned above but, a lot of people didn't get the iPhone when it first came out, the iPod, the iMac, and a lot of apples innovative products over the years. It will not be a fad, but the thing that will really drive this device wont be apple it will be Google. Chromium OS on a tablet will be the bee's knees.

And one further comment. With the Evo you can make it a mobile hot spot (e.g. wireless router) so you can actually have both the iPad and Evo, only pay for the sprint data plan for the Evo and use it to connect the iPad to the net and even over 4g speeds...

I use my ipad less and less daily because of the evo. I have a 32gb wifi only model. That being said, on a business trip the ipad definitely comes with me. Being able to hookup a bt keyboard and remote into the servers is much more pleasant on an ipad. That being said of course the Evo will be supplying the internet connection for the ipad.

sorry to be off topic, but i would want a ipad for the sole purpose of having a color display ebook reader. I mean the other features are nice with it but i am in the market for a color ebook reader... should i just wait till an android tablet comes out? I mainly want to read pdfs of articles and such when i have some downtime (many which include colorized graphs and such so its hard to read those in non-color displays). Since last time I checked (awhile ago), the ipas does not have native pdf file support and must be converted? Is that still the case?

Also if anyone has ideas of any color ebook reader on the market, please let me know =)

The nice thing about the ipad is you have access to 3 book stores directly on the device. Apple's iBooks, Amazon's and Barnes and Nobles.

I'm actually looking at going the opposite way. I have an Evo and am looking at getting an iPad (currently on hold at the Apple Store until tonight...)

I absolute love the Evo. It had a "WOW" factor for me when I tried it in the Sprint store on release day. Something the iPad didn't. I have used a LOT of smart phones, including the iPhone (jailbroken), and the Evo is far and away the best (with the exception of non-ROM gaming and video editing).

I'm actually struggling to figure out when I would use the iPad over the Evo. As it was mentioned, the Evo is pretty much a mini-tablet. It would be nice to view web pages on a larger screen, but it's not that big of an issue given that the Android web browsers auto-adjust the text to fit on screen (and the Evo screen makes most web pages pretty viewable). Only thing I can see myself using an iPad for is books (I have a Kindle, though it would be nice to have access to three bookstores and have a color screen) and gaming, which I have a hard time justifying since you are paying for Newgrounds style games.

I greatly prefer typing on the Evo over the iPad (or even iPhone). Typing on the iPad for me has been awkward -- maybe if I use it for a while I would get used to it, but I'm not sure I could ever match the Evo speed (around 40 - 50 wpm).

One thing to note -- if you are willing to root your phone you can enable WiFi tethering without having to pay the $30. Technically it's not allowed by Sprint, but even the Sprint guy I was buying the phone from said that they aren't paying attention and told me to just go with wired tethering instead of paying Sprint. Wireless tethering will also be included in the 2.2 release.

I have both and it's awesome. :D
me too, BUT I use the ipad MOSTLY for demos, and such for my work... so it gets used, but mostly when I'm not doing a wedding/modeling consult it just sits on it's dock...

I have movies loaded on it for my constant plane rides and such... I TRIED watching movies on my old hero, and it was constantly stopping, locking up, so I just stopped and haven't tried on the evo yet....

Picked an iPad up a couple days ago. Been using the Evo for a week now.

I'm actually rather underwhelmed with the iPad. I figured I would sell my Kindle for $200 and use the iPad as my eReader, and with all the excitement there had to be another $300 in value in the iPad. I'm really not seeing it, and am getting increasingly irritated with the minor functionality losses from Android to iPad. Not just the lack of multi-tasking and Flash that everyone talks about, but also other smaller stuff too: no back button, no "trial" period with apps means I have to waste a lot of time researching purchases, and a crap display (I REALLY started to notice the text fuzziness, especially coming from the EVO which has an extra 100 PPI).

Probably taking it back tomorrow.

Why are the 2 even being compared? They are not even classified as the same device. This was a confusing thread.

I don't think it is confusing at all. I want the most portable device to keep up with everything.

The palm centro has been good, but it is not a replacement for anything. It allows a little access. Easy access to all my emails, but no company imap email (can't reply...only read and delete). In a pinch access websites, maps, phone numbers, etc. But it is not convenient.

The iPad has been almost a 100% laptop replacement. I rarely use my laptop now after about 16 years of using a laptop anywhere from 1 to 5 hours a day, in the evenings. I am surrounded by desktops (I teach in a computer lab) during the day, and pretty much have to use a desktop with dual and triple monitor support. But the ipad has still proven to be useful even at work.

At home and out and about, the iPad is all i need except for some real serious computer work that dictates a full computer with as large of a screen (or multiple screens) as possible...things that CAN be done on a laptop but which are not as easy as on a desktop. So other than serious work, including any shopping, bill paying, research, general browsing, etc, the iPad is perfect...really perfect. It is easy to get up and move around the house, get up and leave the house, taking the iPad with me. I can imagine trying to use the Evo at home for these things, but I can imagine that it would be pretty small...and would want to drag out the laptop which i have even put away from the coffee table after years and years of it sitting out every day for when i get home to plop that brick of a device in my lap.

But toting around the iPad in a little handbag is a little...well...not very manly. I am doing it...but it is a little awkward.

The newotn was really nice sized...i could make it fit in my pocket. It didn't really fit...but i could cram it in if i wore the right size pockets.

So, the purpose of the thread was to discuss how to have the best of the iPad (to me, basically a laptop replacement)...and the best of the Evo (truly portable...a real chance at continuity).

After everybody ha weighed on is, i do plan to get one. And will keep the iPad...it has become to much a part of my life.

But, i am going to wait. I want to see sprint do something about the 4g fee. That adds on $20 to our monthly bill for something that isn't even available in my area...and may not be for a long while.

So, this thread is some what moot to me...except that i really want an evo...and now will not get on on principal. Several have said about the money issue. It's not the upfront cost...but the on going cost that is the hang up. And it is not even that i can't afford it...as much as the principal of paying for something we don't even get to benefit from.
Thankfully, the competition is strong...and the everything unlimited plans are coming down in price. Sprint will yield to the pressure and drop the fee at some point...hopefully.

Really?? I only typed for just a few moments on an evo, but i thought the keys were very narrow making typing accuracy More difficult than even an iPod. But compared to an iPad, how could It be faster?

I can type very fast on an iPad, especially when i rotate to e horizontal orientation, like right now. The keyboard is quite easy and i can type almost as fast as a full size keyboard. In fact, in some instances, i prefer the iPad for typing because i can do it so quietly (obviously compared my laptop...not an eve or ipod).

The only problem I have had is that I tend to hit the ".?123" button next to the space bar. If the ipad is out in front of me, it is not as much of a problem, but if i am sitting, and the iPad is in my lap as it is now, the pad slides up against my stomach and i starting hitting that "shift" key. But switching to single or few fingers does the trick.

But even in vertical orientation if i pick up the pad, in a rocking back and forth motion, holding the iPad on each side, I am able to type very fast.

Surprising, even for a jailbroken iPad, there aren't any hacks to the keyboard. I desperately want a forward delete and a set of arrow keys.

Well, as far as something that is GONNA cost 1/2, or GONNA be better, is of little interest to me. At THAT time, I will buy it...and sell whatever. Amazon and ebay make for some great resale potential. Especially Amazon. There is almost always somebody ready to buy what I am willing to sell. I might loose a little money, but usually no more than 10-20%...and in the mean time, I have had the pleasure of using one of the single coolest technology devices I have used...well...since the Apple Newton.

As far as Macs crashing...I hear you. When I taught a class room full of Macs...the word was "SAVE OFTEN" if you don't want to loose your work. If you even THINK you have had a good few minutes of work, save! In contrast, today, with an XP lab, I might have one students computer per week crash where they loose everything they were working on.

I think you are definitely missing it. Part of the problem is that it does take time. In the past week, I have taken my iPad to the gym to work out. I have to say I HATE working out. Music is ok, makes the time pass a little quicker, but I still hate working out. I don't mind tennis...or a long bike ride, unless it is to nowhere. But just running in place KILLS me! I will usually RUN or BIKE to the workout place to get some of the work out in...besides doesn't make sense to get in a car to go work out. Point is, these past two workouts went by faster than any dull, monotonous workout ever...thanks to the iPad. I had tried working out reading on my iTouch, but it was just too small. NO way it was going to be practical. So, I ended up listening to music looking like all of the other iPad listening fools working out to the beat of their own music. Well, my first wo with the ipad, I tried reading a magazine. It actually went really well...the problem was that the magazine app wouldn't let me enlarge the text, so I was only able to flip through the ads and the article titles and larger captions, but that was still enough to make the time on that stupid treadmill go by in a blink. Today, I decided to read a book...mainly because I knew I could set the font size to something really large.

I actually read chapters from both iBooks and Kindle. Both were good...but I think I like iBook a little better because of the quicker access to the font size changer.

I was amazed again at how fast the time flew. I just put the ipad on the machine (three different machines actually), increased the font size and flew through the pages and I increased my speed.

In contrast, some poor lady was trying to read this tiny text on her kindle. I don't know how she was doing it. My text was so big, she probably could have read my book.

the other features are nice with it but i am in the market for a color ebook reader... should i just wait till an android tablet comes out?

I think you have a wonderful idea in mind. There will certainly be better products coming soon. In the mean time, I have really been enjoying the increased reading I am doing because of the iPad. Time is little pockets for me as I go from one place to another. Even sitting around at the house, I tend to find more time to read because of the iPad. When I was young, I read like crazy ('70s and '80s), then there was college...and I have never read a fun book since...literally...1987. It's been that long. Today, I started reading my first novel in that many years. But even outside of a novel, reading everything on the iPad is easier because of the ability to position it just right. I have always found a laptop difficult to position for both my hands and my eyes. And then there is my lap to consider. I have tended to put the laptop over to the side of my armchair because after about 30 minutes, a 17" laptop siting in a lap rest is uncomfortable. Now, multiply that time 6-7 nights a week, month after month. Good riddance to the laptop. In contrast, I am able to sit in a lot more places with the iPad not previously possible with the laptop, therefore I am able to read more comfortably in more places. From chair, to couch, to literally lying on the floor to rest my back with my iPad resting on my chest, to sitting out doors in the late evening setting sun. Point is...the iPad is very flexible.
