But how much time are you really going to spend playing a 3.5 inch video game when your fingers take up much of the screen. I dont get it.

I am not an apple fan either. I just got an phone less iPhone in Jan after the one i got my wife for Christmas (also a phone less iPhone) proved to be so bloddy cool in regards to showing off my photos (Index) and extensive list of apps. It is hard to deny the availability and ease of use of the app store. I hate iTunes, denied my wife and I an iPod of any sort for the longest time because of it.

Actually, my 17" laptop I used to use for the same 3-6 per night died a week after getting the wifi pad. I hadn't even turned it on In a week...went to try to use it and the logic board had died sitting there (pissed I guess). But i got real used to using the iPad exclusively once i got home from work. Hated to have to pay for e repair tothe fairly new laptop, but I do kind of need it for some business use.

Money is only an issue in the absence of value. If it will help simply life 1% I'll justify spending the money on it for sure.

If I had time to play games I suect this whole issue would be a non issue. With 4 jobs (school is out for summer so get a big reprieve from the main job) a pretty active hobby (photography), among other things, I stay too dang busy. Having said that, I did download a couple of games to show off! They are pretty cool!

I don't think it is confusing at all. I want the most portable device to keep up with everything.

The palm centro has been good, but it is not a replacement for anything. It allows a little access. Easy access to all my emails, but no company imap email (can't reply...only read and delete). In a pinch access websites, maps, phone numbers, etc. But it is not convenient.

The iPad has been almost a 100% laptop replacement. I rarely use my laptop now after about 16 years of using a laptop anywhere from 1 to 5 hours a day, in the evenings. I am surrounded by desktops (I teach in a computer lab) during the day, and pretty much have to use a desktop with dual and triple monitor support. But the ipad has still proven to be useful even at work.

At home and out and about, the iPad is all i need except for some real serious computer work that dictates a full computer with as large of a screen (or multiple screens) as possible...things that CAN be done on a laptop but which are not as easy as on a desktop. So other than serious work, including any shopping, bill paying, research, general browsing, etc, the iPad is perfect...really perfect. It is easy to get up and move around the house, get up and leave the house, taking the iPad with me. I can imagine trying to use the Evo at home for these things, but I can imagine that it would be pretty small...and would want to drag out the laptop which i have even put away from the coffee table after years and years of it sitting out every day for when i get home to plop that brick of a device in my lap.

But toting around the iPad in a little handbag is a little...well...not very manly. I am doing it...but it is a little awkward.

The newotn was really nice sized...i could make it fit in my pocket. It didn't really fit...but i could cram it in if i wore the right size pockets.

So, the purpose of the thread was to discuss how to have the best of the iPad (to me, basically a laptop replacement)...and the best of the Evo (truly portable...a real chance at continuity).

After everybody ha weighed on is, i do plan to get one. And will keep the iPad...it has become to much a part of my life.

But, i am going to wait. I want to see sprint do something about the 4g fee. That adds on $20 to our monthly bill for something that isn't even available in my area...and may not be for a long while.

So, this thread is some what moot to me...except that i really want an evo...and now will not get on on principal. Several have said about the money issue. It's not the upfront cost...but the on going cost that is the hang up. And it is not even that i can't afford it...as much as the principal of paying for something we don't even get to benefit from.
Thankfully, the competition is strong...and the everything unlimited plans are coming down in price. Sprint will yield to the pressure and drop the fee at some point...hopefully.

Really?? I only typed for just a few moments on an evo, but i thought the keys were very narrow making typing accuracy More difficult than even an iPod. But compared to an iPad, how could It be faster?

I can type very fast on an iPad, especially when i rotate to e horizontal orientation, like right now. The keyboard is quite easy and i can type almost as fast as a full size keyboard. In fact, in some instances, i prefer the iPad for typing because i can do it so quietly (obviously compared my laptop...not an eve or ipod).

The only problem I have had is that I tend to hit the ".?123" button next to the space bar. If the ipad is out in front of me, it is not as much of a problem, but if i am sitting, and the iPad is in my lap as it is now, the pad slides up against my stomach and i starting hitting that "shift" key. But switching to single or few fingers does the trick.

But even in vertical orientation if i pick up the pad, in a rocking back and forth motion, holding the iPad on each side, I am able to type very fast.

Surprising, even for a jailbroken iPad, there aren't any hacks to the keyboard. I desperately want a forward delete and a set of arrow keys.

As a side note, it kills me to hear Macs dont crash, yet you go into the Apple store and the people are lined up to get the Macs fixed. And the fee for fixing them is more than a PC. At least I can goto Wal-Mart and buy any brand video card to fix a simple problem.

Well, as far as something that is GONNA cost 1/2, or GONNA be better, is of little interest to me. At THAT time, I will buy it...and sell whatever. Amazon and ebay make for some great resale potential. Especially Amazon. There is almost always somebody ready to buy what I am willing to sell. I might loose a little money, but usually no more than 10-20%...and in the mean time, I have had the pleasure of using one of the single coolest technology devices I have used...well...since the Apple Newton.

As far as Macs crashing...I hear you. When I taught a class room full of Macs...the word was "SAVE OFTEN" if you don't want to loose your work. If you even THINK you have had a good few minutes of work, save! In contrast, today, with an XP lab, I might have one students computer per week crash where they loose everything they were working on.

I think you are definitely missing it. Part of the problem is that it does take time. In the past week, I have taken my iPad to the gym to work out. I have to say I HATE working out. Music is ok, makes the time pass a little quicker, but I still hate working out. I don't mind tennis...or a long bike ride, unless it is to nowhere. But just running in place KILLS me! I will usually RUN or BIKE to the workout place to get some of the work out in...besides doesn't make sense to get in a car to go work out. Point is, these past two workouts went by faster than any dull, monotonous workout ever...thanks to the iPad. I had tried working out reading on my iTouch, but it was just too small. NO way it was going to be practical. So, I ended up listening to music looking like all of the other iPad listening fools working out to the beat of their own music. Well, my first wo with the ipad, I tried reading a magazine. It actually went really well...the problem was that the magazine app wouldn't let me enlarge the text, so I was only able to flip through the ads and the article titles and larger captions, but that was still enough to make the time on that stupid treadmill go by in a blink. Today, I decided to read a book...mainly because I knew I could set the font size to something really large.

I actually read chapters from both iBooks and Kindle. Both were good...but I think I like iBook a little better because of the quicker access to the font size changer.

I was amazed again at how fast the time flew. I just put the ipad on the machine (three different machines actually), increased the font size and flew through the pages and I increased my speed.

In contrast, some poor lady was trying to read this tiny text on her kindle. I don't know how she was doing it. My text was so big, she probably could have read my book.

I think you have a wonderful idea in mind. There will certainly be better products coming soon. In the mean time, I have really been enjoying the increased reading I am doing because of the iPad. Time is little pockets for me as I go from one place to another. Even sitting around at the house, I tend to find more time to read because of the iPad. When I was young, I read like crazy ('70s and '80s), then there was college...and I have never read a fun book since...literally...1987. It's been that long. Today, I started reading my first novel in that many years. But even outside of a novel, reading everything on the iPad is easier because of the ability to position it just right. I have always found a laptop difficult to position for both my hands and my eyes. And then there is my lap to consider. I have tended to put the laptop over to the side of my armchair because after about 30 minutes, a 17" laptop siting in a lap rest is uncomfortable. Now, multiply that time 6-7 nights a week, month after month. Good riddance to the laptop. In contrast, I am able to sit in a lot more places with the iPad not previously possible with the laptop, therefore I am able to read more comfortably in more places. From chair, to couch, to literally lying on the floor to rest my back with my iPad resting on my chest, to sitting out doors in the late evening setting sun. Point is...the iPad is very flexible.
