Help Fewest clicks to make a call

Hi Everyone. First post. :)

I got my X10 on Friday and have until this Friday to decide whether or not to keep it. Have always been a Sony/Sony Ericsson fan, so hope to come to a "better than satisfied" feeling, so that I can feel good about my choice.

Anyway, the one thing that is really getting under my skin is how many clicks/touches it takes to make a regular call. Even using starred contacts as a shortcut on the homescreen is really clunky and way, way worse for non-starred contacts. I love the direct dial shortcut too, but, as I say, I'm more concerned about those contacts you wouldn't bother to star or shortcut.

I'd be really interested and grateful to hear how other users have set up to make a call starting from homescreen with the fewest number of clicks possible.

Thanks a mill.

Two ways that I like..

1. Speed Dial Old School
Search that in the market. When you hit the dialer, you can assign a number to a particular contact and then just dial out.

Max number of clicks: 3 (Dialer -> Number Assigned -> Call)

2. QuickDial
Search that in the market also. It basically shows you a grid where you can assign contacts to a block. Just hit a particular block, it would automatically dial.

Max number of clicks: 2 (QuickDial -> Contact Pic)

I want something that I can start typing the person's name in and it will come up with suggestions....eg say I want to call Joe Bloggs so I type in "J" and it will come up with all the names who start with "J" both in first name and surname and then when I type "O" it shows only those names who's first 2 letters match (again either first name or surname).

There is something called ThaiDial which is almost that but I dont like the look of it..:(

Try "Gesture Search" (spell?) from Google. It's exactly what you want.
You can find it in the market for free.

Have to say that this is the worst phone I have ever tried, in terms of trying to make a call quickly.

HTC Hero was spot on. So logical. Get the number pad up, press a number and it would try to guess which contact you were aiming for.

Do miss a proper hard key for "call" and "end call".

That 'grid' thingy sounds interesting.....

I would love to know what other phones you have tried, it isn't that hard to make a call.

Assuming you mean you want to do this within the dialler app rather than the contacts I use atakephone to do that. It was something i missed from my htc phone. This does it perfectly.

you can try countouch launcher.. i guess reducing tapping its not in this apps nature but its basically one widget (saves space) that you tap on a certain amount of times to do different actions!

tap once: open browser
tap twice: call john
tap thrice: sms janine
and so forth!!
