Android 2.2 (froyo) Upgrade List

I'm happy to stay at 2.1 as long as they release an update to fix the few things that are wrong with it. i.e the Dialer/call Lag, silent call issue, etc.

If they fixed these few issues then the Eris would be a rock solid 2.1 device that I could live with until my next phone.

Sure, I'd like to see 2.2, but I am a realist and knowing how quickly devices in the tech world fall off the map, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get 2.2. Life will go on.

I'm rooted too, so I already got the only few bits of Froyo that I was interested in anyways (tether, etc.)

I don't have the dialer lag or or silent call issue, so life is good as far as I'm concerned. I certainly won't be installing any "leaks" to upgrade to 2.2 - learned that one the hard way. :D

Given the fact that other Hero-based phones like the MyTouch 3G are getting Froyo, it means there's still shred of hope for the Eris. It means it is possible on the hardware, however HTC needs to feel that it is worthwhile. At this point the only reason the Eris won't get 2.2 is if they don't feel it's necessary.

I wonder if people from these forums contacted HTC and let them know just how many people would want Froyo, if they would put some effort into it.

The MyTouch line are all vanilla Android so the upgrade is pretty simple. If the hardware will support it then it can be installed...more or less.

The Hero, Eris, Sprint Hero, Evo and Incredible all have Sense which makes things a little more difficult. Just like they did with 2.1, HTC will have to modify Sense to function with 2.2.

The good news of all this, HTC has said that they 2010 phones will get 2.2. This means that they will be developing 2.2 with Sense for the Evo and Incredible. This means that there will be a version of Sense out there with 2.2. The fact that the Mytouch line will be getting 2.2 also means that the Eris/Hero will support it. Maybe not the full version, but to some degree it can happen. So with the hardware capable and a version of 2.2 with Sense coming out anyway there shouldn't be too many reasons that HTC won't offer it for the our phones. The only thing we may have to worry about is Verizon. If Verizon decides that they don't want to offer an update then we may end up just being SOL.

Maybe this is why the leakers have a different boot loader, maybe it's the bootloader froyo uses. So maybe the leakers will get. I could also see htc putting out more leaks after all you can already put a leaked v1 version on the eris it just needs tweaked, I would not be apprised to see two more froyo leaks this year followed by an official release a month after they are comfortable with the feed back they have received from leal users. Then again what do I know, I could be wrong

Well, that and the fact that it will still take some degree of development time on HTC's part (which they may not be willing to invest). My gut is telling me that there will be no "official" Android 2.2 upgrade made available for the Eris. However, given OTD's quoted post, all of the stars should be aligned for a relatively porting of an Android 2.2-based ROM that will be mostly functional on the Eris (sorry, Live Wallpapers won't be supported ;)).

If we learned anything from the last OTA update, it's that both HTC and Verizon will take FOREVER to make anything happen (like 10 months from now, at earliest). Since, in 10 or 11 months, some Eris users will be eligible for Verizon's "New Every 2" upgrade package, I don't see why either party would invest the time into this project.

My advice would be to stick to what works for you right now. If you like the 2.1 OTA, keep using it. If you're rooted and like a particular ROM, keep using it. Let's all wait until we've got a stable Android 2.2-based ROM ported . . . by that time, we'll have a better idea of HTC and Verizon's plans to upgrade or not to upgrade the Eris. At this point, if you want Android 2.2, root and run a ROM. After all, if you're not happy with root, you'll be eligible for a "New Every 2" very soon thereafter.

I agree with you. Going from 1.5 to 2.1 was a big deal because that enabled us to have Google Navigation and some other apps that required 1.6+. But now that I'm on root, I have all the goodies of 2.1 plus I have wireless tethering. I don't know what else is so wonderful about 2.2. If I wanted my launcher to look like Froyo, I can just use ADW or Launcherpro. I really can't think of any other reason to get excited about Froyo. If it comes, cool...if it doesn't, meh.

Its supposed to be double the speed and performance of 2.1, imagine how big of a plus that would be alone

I'm already using JIT (the major speed increase component of 2.2) with Sense on my rooted phone. The phone's benchmarks are twice as fast as a result (~5 MFLOPS instead of ~2.5 without JIT), but it's not really making a huge difference in real life use of the phone. If you're having problems that you hope 2.2 will fix, it won't. Same as 2.1 for those who had problems on 1.5.

Yeah, double the benchmark speeds...but in terms of real-world applications? It'll open up my gmail a split second faster. And at what cost would this come in terms of battery life?

I'm not saying "Oh, don't give me 2.2". I'm just saying "Eh, no biggie if we don't get it." :)

It actually shouldn't have an affect on battery life. JIT makes certain apps perform better by doing certain things to make them more efficient. But it doesn't affect you phone's clockspeed or anything. I had JIT back when I had root, and the phone noticably performed faster (or maybe it was placebo, but it felt faster).

Im sorry this might not be the best thread to ask this question, but, from What I've been reading on this thread an so many others, there is some speed increase by rooting ur phone, so this speed increase its just by just rooting or because of the ROMs....or what?

Whatever speed increases one might see in a rooted ROM would be to the developers removing "bloatware" (insert your own definition here :D), overclocking, and the JIT (just-in-time) compiler. Did I miss anything? (bet I did ;)).

I recently asked VZW support bit Twitter, if the Eris would be getting android 2.2. I of course was told that it falls on HTC, and HTC has not told them anything yet. I posed the same question to htc, and 4 days later I have yet to get a response. I agree wIth the majority in here. If we get 2.2 great if not then my wife upgrade is InOct, and with have to convince her to trade phones with me so I can get a phone that will get it. Yeah I know, good luck with that huh lol
