got it finally last night,

its about the timing and just getting lucky, I also recommend not using the loop. seemed like it worked for me without the loop running.

Was getting all sorts of daemon errors. but all of a sudden i manually typed adb shell and it was there... rest of the process went smoothly..

This worked for me - 2nd try. Best advice in simple form. Much, much appreciated after trying to understand and get the timing of the SD Card insert correct for a few days now.

No special drivers, no special SD card. Worked with my generic Transcend 4GB card I had been using in my previous phone.

Worked yesterday for me after trying unsuccessfully since day 1. I plugged in my 2gb pny card from best buy about half a second before the sound went off and worked like a charm for me

You are a genius. ****ing rooted! I don't know why but I was using latest htc sync drivers and it didn't work. But after using the one provided in the 10 mins root video package I was able to get it to work with this method.

Ensure computer speakers are ON and begin the LOOP process. Honestly, the LOOP is only for visuals that you have a connection...

** shut phone down first **

1) pop out SDcard, but leave in slot
2) Volume Down + Power
3) Volume Down, select recovery, press power (be ready for next step!!)
4) Once you hear the "device removed" windows sound, quicky press in your sdcard in! You'll hear another "device found" sound a few seconds after.

It may take a few tries, it's really odd timing. I've got about 3:5 chance when I try!

That's it! Follow the 10min infamous video for the rest.

This is basically how the "quickly insert/remove" sdcard process worked after many attempts... its a matter of catching the recovery in-between some special initialization.

*** TIPS ***
* try right as your hear the beep-beep
* try right at the last beep of the beeps ?!?
* try right before the recovery black screen .5 sec after the beeps

Going to try this when I get home.

I've tried and tried to root, but was never able to accomplish getting the phone recognized in recovery mode. I'm using the 8GB card that came with the storm. I tried this method at work but it wasn't until I got home (same computer) that I tried it with the cable that came with the phone that I was successful. This worked on the first try.

I will continue trying more. it def seems you need to insert the card at the exact proper moment and i just havent hit it yet...

Just got root using this method with the 2GB PNY - tried 40+ times on various other machines using different methods and cards - the PNY card worked on the first attempt - YMMV

This method worked for me on the first try! Thanks! I had previously tried it on 2 computers with 3 different sd cards but when i read this and tried the method it worked! I am currently rooted and running WiFi Tether with no data loss!

I uninstalled HTC Sync and used PDAnet driver, then did it (push in my SD card 1-2 secs after you hear the "device removed" windows sound). It worked!

Hoping somebody can help.

I seem to be having driver issues. I modified and installed the drivers and while on the white screen it shows as Android Bootloader Interface in device manager. When I go into recovery it has two listings in device manager under disk drives. Both say HTC Android USB Phone Device. Is this correct? Should I manually update these listings to the modified driver as well? Any help would be appreciated.

I was following their method, but didn't work. I waited about secs before pushing in the SDCard.

Keep trying, I do think every comp has different timing. Also, I uninstalled HTC Sync, and installed PDANet driver.

I actually got it just by doing the optical pad + power on. Connecting usb then going into recovery. No click in/out method. I assume I just happened to get lucky this time because I have tried every method I have seen posted multiple times over the last week.

ugg...i've tried everything, i'll just keep trying until an easier method is available.

By PDA drivers, do you mean just installing the PDA client by itself?
