Anyone using their Evo to tether to pc via USB?

Teathering works like a champ... I've done it twice now on two seperate occations on two seperate computers... here are my directions.. hope it can help you out.

You need to DL the free version of PDANet on your EVO.

On your computer: First Dl this: http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/

Then DL the appropriate version of this:
http://junefabrics.com/android/

make sure your computer downloads the drivers for the EVO, did it automatically for me after I installed HTC Sync.

connect your phone via USB and select just charge.

you may need to go Settings--> Applications--> Development... and set "debugging" as appropriate (cant remember if its on or off)

open PDANet on your phone.

im no expert and i had no trouble teathering via this route. It works really nicely!

and for the person asking about the plan... i use the Everything Data 450 for 80$

I've tried everything you posted and verified several times all is as you posted. If I enable internet sharing for any reason I get error 67 but that is the only time I see that error. I see mobile network connected and internet sharing is not grayed out unless mobile network is not showing as connected, once it is connected the internet sharing is lit. I also get a modem error 633 showing modem is already in use so PDA net must set everything up but EVO won't allow internet connection. I try diff. settings and PDA net says ready to connect but then I get error 651 dial up failed.

No matter what I have tried in any combo I cannot connect. There were a few times I thought I connected but browser was pulling up temp files from bookmarks.

Wifi is off. no 4g in area. 450 data plan all HTC / Sprint updates done. fresh PDA net and HTC sync download and install. Nothing will allow internet connection.

I would love to see proof and witnesses / statements. And your not using a Google freebie phone with no restrictions on your acct.

Can't see how easy tether would be any diff. but would try anything other than root. Waiting on root to get the bugs worked out.

thanks for any proof you tether on 3g because I don't believe it.

sorry you dont belive it.. but its 100% TRUE. I did this method on my computer and set it up on my friends computer. it worked flawlessly both times. Did you make sure that the EVO drivers downloaded correctly? Did you select "just charge" when connecting the EVO via USB? Did you make sure the proper debugging was selected via Settings--> Applications--> Development?

This is my first Android device and my first time teathering.. I'm anything but an expert when it comes to this stuff. wish i could help more.. but this method worked GREAT for me on two seperate occations. Good Luck!

mine works fine with PDAnet, as well; it's the native tethering i can't get to work.

3g, launch day hw ver 2 phone, 1500 family plan.

i'll give you proof if you tell me what will satisfy your skepticism.

I moved to the EVO from a Moment. I used Azilink on the moment to connect via USB to my laptop and get internet. When I got the EVO, I tried Azilink and at first, it did not work. Then I set the pop up that appears when you plug in the USB to 'HTC Sync', ran Azilink on the EVO, ran the script for ADB and OpenVPN as administrator on my laptop, and boom, internet, all sites.
Google 'Azilink' and read the Moment tethering thread for all the gruesome details. It took far longer to write this post than to get online via Azilink after you set it up.

PDAnet just plain works, and works well on both Macs and PCs. Been using for my various phones for years.

Btw, the nice advantages of using USB, except when you need to share with multiple users:
- providing power to the phone
- you avoid the growing problem of WiFi signal congestion, with everyone carrying around MiFis these days

The stock tethering option works for me. I downloaded the HTC Sync application to my PC and performed a sync. I then switched the USB connection type to Internet Sharing. It took a few seconds, but I was able to get an Internet connection on my PC. It created another connection in the Network Connections folder on Windows.

Well, I would LIKE to use this feature. using easy tether gets me around .2 MBS and seeing you get 1.1, this has sparked my interest.

When I try and do this, Windows 7 fails to install my Evo.

Any sugestions? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times already.

I'm at work right now using EasyTether to connect via USB. I am on a Windows 7 64 bit laptop and it works great. I tried PDANet but was unsuccessful, since I cannot get HTC Sync to connect (but that's another story). I downloaded the EasyTether app from the Marketplace, downloaded the drivers from EasyTether's website. Then I connected my Evo and set it as "Disk Drive" from the menu and the laptop installed all the necessary drivers.

To establish a connection, I connect the Evo to my laptop via USB, select the "Disk Drive" option from the menu and then double-click on the EasyTether icon in the taskbar. It shows a message reading "Connection Established. Using ADB transport". Below are my SpeedTest results:

I am new to the whole Droid scene, coming from a 8330 Blackberry. I just followed the steps from ez2bgman and it worked great, the first time. As you can see here, and this is with 3G, will test again tomorrow in a 4G area. :)

Win Vista 32 bit
EasyTether
3G
Able to use https

Glad you got it to work.

I just dl'ed and installed the latest version of HTC Sync (2.0.40). I was finally able to partially sync my contacts w/ Outlook 2007, but even better is that PDANet was finally able to connect.

For those that are having issues with PDANet, try installing HTC Sync 2.0.40: HTC Mobile Phone Support - HTC EVO? 4G (Sprint) - Downloads . Then run PDANet on your phone and then on your PC/Laptop (of course with the USB cable attached first :p ).

Normally I would not quote a big pix like this, but in this case I did; and for what I think is a good reason.

I got pdanet and tether to work like a charm on one of my boxes, but not all. In every case where I could not connect I got a driver failed to install error on the box before I got 67ed.

If you google error 67 and droid you can see this is not really a new issue. I have also found a comment that if you install the droid SDK this is suppose to cure the driver issue. But to install the SDK you have to have your JAVA stuff up to snuff. By the time I got to this point I was having caffeine withdrawal so I just gave up.

It would be nice if someone could figure out which driver/drivers are needed to solve this issue (HINT HINT Pdanet or tether) and post them on line.

YMMV:cool:

If your using a non-rooted EVO that was not from the Google give away and on a regular data plan like the $69 or $99, and without the sprint hotspot feature, etc. and using a PC with Win. 7. and Wifi, 4g, bluetooth turned off. so the only connection option is USB.

It would be great if someone could explain step by step what they did on PC and then EVO to get USB tethering working.

witness would be great but if they don't know what they are looking at, they wouldn't know if it was wifi or USB tether. Could be temp page files loading. Mine almost fooled me until I went to new sites.

If set up is in fact possible, then I must be missing a step along with many others. A step by step post would be great since we all have the same phones and prob. win. PC.

Thanks

All i did was download HTC sync, connect evo via USB to Pc ,turn on internet sharing on evo,it creates an new internet connection, start surfing the web.........

I have several PC so I picked one that doesn't have any other way to connect to internet except hard wired cable. I installed HTC sync then unplugged ethernet cable and plugged in USB and booted EVO. on Win. 7 (32bit) PC. It quickly picked up new device and started loading HTC device drivers and then when I selected internet sharing on EVO (where you would select disk drive screen) And turned on network connection on EVO in network connection screen, the PC started downloading more software. I can't remember the name but it was for network connection. Once this was updated the PC showed new internet connection just like that. It couldn't have been any easier. I surfed websites and verified all was working perfect. Wow! I tethered my EVO in like 10 min. and it was all plug and play.

Then I turned my EVO Wifi off and yep error 67 and no matter what I tried the 67 error or wrong name and password error popped up.

So if you have wifi turned on with a wifi signal the EVO will plug and play very easy. It's the 3g tethering that seems to be the problem is why I don't believe unrooted EVO on reg. data plans are working.

I've tried PDAnet with the same results. Error, Error, Error for one reason or another.

One person said they used tethering on past phones for years and had no problem setting up EVO but yet most that attempt these various methods keep getting the same error 67, etc.

Some phones must be blocked and others are not, yet...

Sure wish someone could tell me how to solve this problem... Without buying hotspot or moving to a 4g area. Is easytether any diff. then PDAnet ?

Ok I called sprint as I didn’t know about the free phone as modem but I couldn’t get my sprint hotspot to work on my new EVO. I found out they had so many activations the day the EVO came out a lot didn’t get setup right. As soon as they setup my phone right the sprint hotspot worked and the phone as modem from HTC. I get the same speeds from both. The only good thing about the sprint hotspot is you can do more than one computer at a time. I am disconnecting the sprint hotspot today. so if you’re getting the error code 67 just take it to a sprint store and have them reactivate the phone. hope this was helpful. also i have done all the OTA updates and still working fine.

I also talked to Sprint CSR today and was told they do not allow tethering unless you pay for hotspot at $29.99

I replied, that's not going to happen but I will root my phone if I have too. You can put the $10 EVO fee towards my extra data.

I'm told, the error 67 stands for wrong name and password because you don't have the hotspot feature enabled by sprint. If feature is enabled you have a Sprint ID which allows you to tether a device be it hotspot or USB, etc. If no ID then sprints system locks you out is what I was told. And you know how that goes with a diff. reply from each Sprint CSR.

They said, It has nothing to do with your phone not being activated properly because they don't allow tethering, unless you pay for hotspot. Not sure I believe that after what has happened below.

Now get this... Are you ready ?

If you are here you have read my above post showing I have followed every single step shown by articles like this

http://blogs.computerworld.com/16355/android_tethering

which explains step by step how to tether your EVO. I explained, Sprint CSR said EVO was not allowed to tether without hotspot but after talking with this CSR today something happened which caused my phone to lock up and I had to reboot. This is the first time phone has ever locked up but I did download about 10 apps last night. ( rebooted after charging.) EVO worked fine for hours today before this so not sure what caused it. Any way, I posted this info. given by CSR tonight and then figured I would try one more time to tether EVO since others claim they can.

I already had PDAnet on EVO and Laptop so I turned off Wifi on EVO and Laptop and turned on PDAnet on EVO and Laptop along with debugging and charge only. I had already tried every combination before with no luck so what's 1 more.

Plugged in USB to same port on laptop as before. I then selected PDAnet icon, mouse right click, connect as I have done 50 times over the past couple weeks and internet access pops up on my toolbar vs error.

I have double and triple checked everything and Wifi is turned off with inernet access showing PDAnet modem 2 internet access. I ran a speed test using speakeasy.net and I'm getting 1.48 Mbps Down and 0.39 Mbps UP inside my house which has a weak signal. If it was Wifi I would be getting 5-7 Mbps down tethered. I turned everything off and unhooked USB and set up again. EVO tethered just like I was connecting to my home Wifi with no errors. Not real fast but faster then my old DSL internet I was stuck with for years.

I played around with PDAnet Bluetooth connection but no luck tethering that for internet. Plugged USB back in and selected connect, and again internet access just like that. There is no way in hell I screwed up before because this is way too easy. Sprint must have changed something on my account. No I didn't upgrade or change anything on my account.

Above link shows step by step EVO tethering if your phone is activated correctly is my best guess at this time.

How in the hell is this possible unless sprint changed something in their system and that is why my phone locked up and needed to reboot ? Now it works fine and tethers with no errors.

All the settings that are working now are no diff. then what I tried before with error 67. So although sprint told me NO TETHERING, it seems they did change something on my acct. or activation without telling me they made a mistake.

I Apologize for not believing those who claimed to have tethered EVO and although you can see why I didn't believe it was possible I was wrong. Sorry !

My Step by step setup I ask others to offer...

download FREE PDAnet from market on EVO, then PC version on PC and install. It's FREE

turn off Wifi on EVO and PC

Make sure PC PDAnet icon is in system tray and right click on it. You will see where it says connect at top of pop up menu. Wait! we will come back to this just wanted you to make sure PDAnet was installed and ready.

Now make sure EVO settings are correct:

Go to... Menu, settings, wireless networks, mobile networks (checked and showing connected). If this is not showing connected it will give error on PC saying device is not connected to internet.

DO NOT select internet sharing. If you do it will give you DNS connection problem and then error 67 so only select mobile network and make sure it shows connected.

Menu, settings, connect to PC, charge only. ( If you select internet sharing here it was not a problem for me either way. But, do not select it in wireless networks window )

Menu, settings, applications, development,USB debugging. DO NOT select allow mock locations. PC will show internet access but when you open browser it won't load pages. Once I deselected allow mock locations, all pages loaded fine and speed test ran as before.

Now make sure EVO PDAnet is turned on. select Apps, PDAnet widget. It should say PDAnet is on and running as a background service on your phone. Please click PDAnet tray icon from the computer to connect.

Now go to your PC and right click the PDAnet tray icon and at the top of pop up menu select connect.

A system tray pop up window should say verifying and then activated. If you open internet connection is should say Pdanet modem connected. If you hover over internet tray icon it should show PDAnet modem internet access.

That's it. a step by step method that worked for me. I know it was a little long and has additional steps but wanted people to be sure PDAnet was running and ready so when they selected connect, they would know if there was a problem it was not because app was not running, etc.

After all the hell I have been through over this, I hope to save others some grief.

PS: when people ask for a step by step, something like this is what they are looking for. Not everyone is a pro nor can they read your mind.

Good Luck!

They said, It has nothing to do with your phone not being activated properly because they don't allow tethering, unless you pay for hotspot is what I was told.

Now this person did say he has read rooted phones and phones using 3rd party software can tether but it is not approved by sprint unless you pay the $29.99

I was also told Google phones are on unlimited Google plan and when they switch to sprints data plan they will be blocked from tethering unless hotspot feature is paid for. If Google phone which was set up for unlimited Google plan switched to Sprint plan without the hotspot feature, it should not work unless sprint has not pulled the plug on those phones yet. I expect any of these phones which have slipped by will be blocked by sprint when the Google data plan contract expires.

If your phone will still tether after that without root your one of the lucky ones from what I have been told.

It is no diff. then logging on to your Wifi router at home. No ID/PW no access.

But we already have access on our phones, we just need to extend that connection to laptop without sprint detecting the device.

How can you connect device to EVO without detection from sprint ? Root ?

PDAnet and easytether set up your phone as modem so sprint should have no problem detecting that network connection and blocking it as they have done with mine.

based on all the info. I still don't believe tethering is possible by just turning on internet sharing with retail store purchased EVO on standard plan. If it were, mine would also connect.

Just download EasyTether and you can connect your Evo via USB and surf the net. Do a search and you will see that the instructions area posted in many thread, even in this thread. I use it all the time when I'm at work and I have a stock, non-rooted Evo.

sorry ez2bgman, I posted while working on tethering EVO and then went pack to edit after post hit AF.

Any help with bluetooth tethering EVO would be great as in step by step like above.

thanks
