Nexus One Cracked Screen

Idk if your screens are just not as durable as mine, but I dropped my nexus one while running down my driveway and it rolled and slid about 15 feet and theres only one small dent near the power button... There isn't even a scratch on the screen

I was holding my phone too gently, got distracted, and my n1 took a four-foot faceplant onto concrete. The glass shattered but the LED & digitizer were fine. I took it to iphone repair,fix damaged iphones| fix iphones and blackberries | fix and repair blackberry | brokemyiPhone in Sonoma County, CA and they fixed it with original parts for $150. Nice guys with some good supply contacts apparently. I recommend them. I looked for the part online without success. The owner said they were working on getting all the N1 parts (logic board, shell, etc)

Not a bad deal really,considering insurance is $60/year and the HTC deductible is $150 already.

i just went to their store today cuz mine screen broke and they told me they do not have the part to replace the screen yet. they have the parts to replace the digitizer and the top glass cover only so i sadly will have to deal with htc in order to get my phone fixed.

btw i have some knowledge on this subject so i will educate the thread.
first the screen is amoled not lcd. its harder to replace becuase its a new technology
there are many differences between lcd and oled displays. first oled does not require a backlighting system instead they brightness of each pixel is controlled independently meaning it takes up less space and means a pixel can actually be turned of making oleds (currently) twice as energy efficient as lcd.
secondly and more importantly is the reason why these cracks under the screen destroy the whole thing instead of leaving only a few dead pixels like it would on a tft or lcd. this happens because of the one fatal flaw of organic light emitting diodes which happens to also be its greatest asset. they are organic, what this means is that the leds are incredibly sensitive to moisture if an oled is exposed to moisture it is going to die and as you have seen this happens quite rapidly. just thought everyone might want to learn something

Just to add my sad story to this "cracked screen" thread.
Had my N1 8 days...pulled it out of my front pocket to find the screeen spidered.
Not the top glass (perfectly smooth) but underneath. Touch sensitivity won't respond at all now.
Nice looking $500 paperweight at the momont.

Going through Assurian Insurance (with the $139 deductible) for a replacement...but none in stock...waiting for a call back about shipment status but they say could be weeks. Just don't have the money to foot another outta pocket payment for the new one so stuck waiting.

Had my G1 6months and dropped it a few times with nothing but minor scratches. This is really too bad about the N1 screen: buyer beware for sure.

To respond to someones earlier post with concern about the 'camera bulge' possibly putting excess pressure on the screen: I don't think so cuz mine cracked near the bottom half of the screen. The top behind the camera lens is fine. ?? Just my experience about that point.

I would call HTC About this. It's thought this is caused by the battery expanding but is a known issue. In anycase I wouldn't call insurance on it. It was covered on CNET as well.

This really dampers my enthusiasm on possibly getting the N1.

MY Behold 2 has an AMOLED screen as well and it has taken many a 4 - 6 ft drop on marble/linoleum/concrete. Did a drop kick & roll once and it slide about 8 feet and yet the screen is still solid, no scratches. The most that has ever happened, the back plate flew off with the battery but that's about it. Boots right back up like a champ ... plus, I'm not a believer in screen protectors or cases. It takes away from the beauty of the device.

how THICK is the behold? roughly the same size, right? but how big is the battery? how much room is allowed for expansion?

and honestly, if you're thinking of passing up an n1 for a phone like the behold 2, well... more power to you... :rolleyes:

It's no comparison I agree. But I do need a device that's durable and I've yet to hear one horror story that involves the Behold 2 and shattered screen in one sentence.

even if you've yet to hear one story... that doesn't mean their not out there. and FWIW, as much as these stories are disturbing, when it's caused by a drop, well, that's abuse. there's no way around it. but when it's a spontaneus crack like in the CNET story and others, it's been covered by HTC. further, the actual ratio of phones with cracked screens to good ones... ?

no, just joking, but I get a bit frightened each time I hear about, lets say, spontaneous cracked screens. I don't bother about the ones caused by drops, I'm not planning to do it

We are talking about one of the largest screen phones on the market at the moment...we may have reached maximum capacity for the screen size on a smartphone???

what disturbs me the most though is the difference in screen durability between the N1 and G1 (in my experience) - i've beat my G1 up pretty good over the months and nothing but small scratches (with no screen protecter...i agree with the previous post about 'cases and screen protectors detracting from the slim beauty of this phone')...yet N1 can't hang for barely more than a week.

sniff sniff.

rec'd update call from the Insurance Co. to inform me that they are still waiting on the replacement to ship to me. Not holding my breath.

The same thing happened to me. I got mine on thursday, and already last night the inner screen cracked. There's not a scratch on the outer screen and I've been very careful with it, I dropped it on the floor once but that was hours before I noticed anything on the screen, so I doubt that is the reason. It sucks paying that much for a phone to have it ruined two days later.

I'll ask around in local phone stores here, but it's likely that they'll laugh at me. The phone has not been launched in Norway yet and it's not like I can ship it to dr cell phone or either of those repair shops. I guess I'll just have to ask around, and maybe I'll build up the courage to ask HTC - I bought it through a site kind of like eBay which is Norwegian, the package was unopened and all, but that means I have no receipt and the warranty states that it goes for the original customer only, so I have a feeling they won't be very intent on helping me.

The N1 screen is pretty durable. I have had this phone since it was first released. Ive dropped it on many many occasions, with no scratches or cracks. My phones glass screen is cracked now but that is from falling down the stairs and the phone taking a trip over the railing 6 ft above a cement ground. But the crack is not effecting the functionality of the phone at all.

thats my biggest fear w/ this phone. i had g1 for 2 months, was getting out of the car and fell out of my hand. and cracked screen. meanwhile i've had countless blackberries that i would run over w/ my car would still work. i avoid touchscreen since becuase of that but when i saw nexus one was love at first site and part w/ my bold9700. just hoping i have better luck w/ it.

Read all the posts. Last nite I used the browser about an hour & noticed it was hot about 1/3 down from the top back. I plugged it into wall charger, turned it upside on "meeting" so he wouldn't ring & wake me. When I picked him up this AM, there's a speck like pencil lead in middle of the screen, precisely where the heat was on the back, & a fine diagonal crack side-to-side. It did't fall! I first thought a gnat was stuck on my screen protector & it had a wrinkle. I can see the glass has a fine crack..color not affected. I wonder if this glass is too heat sensitive & that HOT Snapdragon hit the glass when I turned him over to "sleep"? Problem: got MOTO Droid 4/6, sound probs. Got a second Droid..still garbled.3rd week of my
30 days, I got the Incredible.& definitely loving it.30 days over, insurance excludes broken glass. I feel this is a manufacturer's defect but will no doubt be accused of dropping him. Do I call Verizon, Best Buy, or HTC? Appreciate advice. Cher

I made the huge mistake of sending my N1 with cracked screen off to Dr. Cell Phone. A week later they sent it back to me with the new screen but it was not installed properly (rubbish was left under the glass) and the buttons and the flash didn't work anymore. They wanted me to pay to ship it back for a second round of repairs and then pay again for them to ship it to me. After threatening a charge dispute they agreed to provide a shipping label for FedEx ground plus complimentary overnight return shipping. Unfortunately, they only sent me the label after 4 days of calling them each day. 3 days after they received it, I still had no updates so I submitted a letter through Google Checkout demanding a response within 36 hours or else I'd submit my charge dispute. Immediately they updated the repair status online to 'Awaiting Parts'. 36 hours later, I called again after submitting the charge dispute and they are claiming that the trackball and flex-cable are broken. (These parts never had problems before sending it to Dr. Cell Phone even after the screen crack and Dr. Cell Phone never documented this in their invoice.) Angelo from Dr. Cell Phone then tried to tell me they had called me at a particular time to tell me this. Since I use google voice, I was able to verify that this was a blatant lie. They are no longer willing to fix it but will only send it back to me (in pieces presumably) if I will once again pay for them to ship it.

It costs somewhere between $75 and $175 and they said they will repair the Nexus One (they do many other HTC phones). However they told me they are waiting on parts from HTC so it could be 1-2 weeks before they get parts.

I'll try to update when I get this resolved...right now, I am back using my trusty G1, with a great looking brick sitting in a box on my desk.

Dropped my N1 yesterday (about the 3rd time it's hit the ground) and spiderwebbed the glass(phone still works fine, it's just the glass front). Called HTC support and was quoted $55 for the repair(Free overnight shipping is included, both ways). The support call was one of the best I've encountered, guy was thorough and friendly. Turn-around time was quoted at 5 days (then upon finding out I was in Canada, 2 days was added to the estimate due to Customs).

Will keep posting updates.

FedEx Shipping label received in Email today. Time to strip the cards out remove the battery and battery cover and package it up. Have 7 days to get it to Fed-Ex.

Guess I'll be backing everything up before it goes as they say they completely wipe it and reprogram it.
