Guardian Anywhere - not downloading

Hi all,

I really like the Guardian Anywhere app, but on my HTC Legend phone it just won't download automatically. I originally had it set to download at 4am, but I'd wake up to a notification saying the download had failed because no wifi was available. I've tinkered around, and adjusted the time to make the auto-download kick in while I'm sitting here watching it. There most certainly is a wifi connection, but the app still claims that there isn't. If I go into the menu and manually tell it to download then it's fine, but part of the beauty is that you're not supposed to need to remember to do this!

Any advice?

Hi,

I'm the author of the Guardian Anywhere app.

I really pleased you're enjoying the app. Hearing the nice things people say about your software is the reason we write and give away apps. :)

The issue you describe is one of the most common problems I hear with respect to the app. The best way of dealing with it is to set the Wifi Sleep Policy to never sleep or not sleep when the phone is plugged in. I've posted instructions on how to do this at the Force Close question.

Because it is such a common issue, I am working on a fix for this in the app. This will mean two extra permissions, and a fair amount of change in the downloading service. I think it will be worth it.

Thanks again for your feedback. You can contact us directly via email.

Many regards,

James Hugman

Thanks for the personal reply James. I have to say that particular setting is very well buried in the far reaches of the Android OS, but I'm pretty sure that should solve it.

Guardian Anywhere is certainly my favourite news ap, it's enticed me back to the Guardian from the FT! Great to be able to read it on a crowded tube without needing either a 3g signal or three feet either side of me to be able to open it out and turn the pages ...
