i sent them a mail and they said the following

Dear Matthew,

Thank you for contacting us. In regards to , I can help you with that. We are considering a Froyo upgrade for some models of our phones, but we are still analyzing the impact this will have on the user experience. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid HTC Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Best regards, OlivierM HTC

The problem is, with the Hero they did give dates, but due to issues getting Sense UI working nicely with the Android update, they kept missing them and people got frustrated and angry. I guess this time around they'd rather wait until they definitely know it's all working before they confirm or deny anything on the date front.

I can't really blame them, it seems they can't win - if they announce dates but miss them people complain, if they don't announce dates, people complain, obviously the best solution is to announce a date and not miss it, but having worked with some of Google's APIs myself, I can say that's not always so easy (everything's open but the documentation is often misleading or contradictory so there's often a lot of trial and error involved).

Trouble is, nowadays , people will actually sell or swap their phone to get hold of a "newer" operating phone system. Ive had my Desire 6 weeks, and eagerly await 2.2 proper. Its my nature to want the latest software , i guess its the same with most people who post on forums ! Even if HTC did release froyo within a few weeks, if another android phone, way superior to the Desire came out, with say Android 3 on it, i`d be so tempted to get hold of it. I already keep looking at the Galaxy, but its samsung, so its a bit of a no go atm :D
