Root [how-to] Wireless-N for the Evo!

***Looks like chuckhriczo from xda has found a way to enable wireless-N on the EVO. Calkulin from xda made the easy .zip to flash. ***

EVO_Enable_Wireless_N.zip

EVO_Disable_Wireless_N.zip

Steps
1. copy the enable .zip to root sdcard
2. boot into recovery
3. flash over
4. reboot
5. enjoy wireless-N speeds (assuming you have a wireless-N router)

Disable .zip included if you want to revert back to original driver

If you have a wireless N router your wifi connection will be incredibly faster using the phone.

Can someone explain to me how it's possible to enable Wireless-N through software on a device that's only supposed to come with a b/g adapter? There's gotta be something I'm missing

The hardware supports it they just did not enable it? Thats pretty standard to do if they were trying to save on battery life. Just like with the graphics Issue. Our phones can probably do 60FPS but its choked down to 30FPS.....

I will be testing the WIFI speeds when I get home to see if this really does work. I would imagine it does or the dev would not have posted it.

Much like the Nexus One, the Evo has the hardware capability for wireless-N. There's no conspiracy, the Nexus One did not come with the software enable either, but it is confirmed that the upcoming Froyo release will provide support.

I believe they also set it to 30fps because anythin after that really isnt noticeable to the human eye.

Hey, guys....I'm a BIG noob to all of this. Does the phone have to be rooted for me to try this? I'd love to be able to use the wireless N band, but even with all the step-by-step guides, I'm scared to root my phone and risk messing it up.

I didn't have any success. LIke raqball I tried to connect to my Netgear WNR3500NL set to "N" with no joy. I even tried both the DDWRT and Tomato firmware--still no luck. I ran benchmarks each time and never saw a significant change.

To anyone who has this working: Can you tell if there is any improvement in wifi signal strength and range? I couldn't care less about speed, but I would love to see the improved signal strength that N offers.

Your phone will have to be rooted for this to work.

I too had the same trepidation about rooting back when I was using the Sprint Hero. It takes a little effort and a lot of reading but it really is worth it, if anything it really helps you understand just how your phone works.

So far the limited testing I've done with it is say I had better range before.

Another reason to enable N is that if you have any G devices on your wireless network your N devices will be slowed down considerably as a result. That's why when running an N network it's usually a good idea to have a separate router on a different channel for any legacy 802.11G devices you might still have.

Cool find! I was curious why the EVO didn't come with "THE UN!!!" enabled. Probably for battery life, but cool that the radio does it. Hope it improves the nasty WiFi reception we get now...
