are there any keybaord software out there that will allow AutoTexting of Tilde, etc. with a shortcut (like Danger OS' AutoText)

Rooting it allows you to take screen shots and remove some of the apps you don't want. About the keyboard question, it looks like you already gave the best advice. It's weird that Samsung didn't include those characters on the physical keyboard like the original sidekicks!
