I use the latest version of CyanogenMod on my N7-2012 and it works fine. Just make sure you have the latest TWRP.
Then just use the "email" app instead of the "gmail" app to get your emails.
Wug's rootkit can do this for you too... can go back to total factory image, like you just took it out of the package.
CM 12.1 nightlys came out a few days ago... seems to work pretty good. Using TWRP 188.8.131.52 recovery.

You can also use WUG's toolkit to automate the process. Fairly easy to use, but still requires a bit of techie talent.
Unless they come down a bit on size and price with their next phone offerings, then my N5 will be my last Nexus phone.

I'm currently on latest stable CyanogenMod ROM. Tried Lollipop but wasn't thrilled. Waiting for custom 5.0 based ROMs to come out.
I don't like it... too busy, I prefer simpler looking forums.
