10.1 wifi ICS - not a happy camper

I haven't used my tablet in about a week. As soon as I powered it on, notification of a big fat update. I told it I wanted to wait, did some stuff on it first (mail, twitter, etc.) everything was dandy.

    Apply update.

First all my home screens were reset. Very bad form, but programmers these days tend to be lazy. It's enough to make me consider iPad though, I hate having to reset those up.

And that's where the problem is. I was able to remove the default apps that are useless to me from th home screen. Adding the launchers for the new one, the tablet keeps freezing on me. I've only managed to get 3 on. When I say freezes I really mean freezes. Can't change to different home screen, home button doesn't work, it's like it's dead.

ICS seems to work if I don't try to set up my home screens but I really want to set them up the way I had them.

I'm not really app crazy, I am using hackers keyboard instead of stock. I'm using K-9 mail instead of stock. I'm using Opera Mobile instead of stock.

I don't know what could be causing this. Any ideas?

Everything else seems to work fine, it's just setting up my home screens that is an issue. I've restarted several times to no avail.

Have you tried a factory reset? Often times, it's helpful whenever updating to a new OS version.

I concur. I always do a factory reset to wipe the device whenever I do a major OS update. For minor updates I may not bother, but going from v3.x to v4.x is a big change, and is partly why your home screens were reset - there are too many changes to the design and layout to keep everything the same.

A factory reset will remove all your settings, apps, etc., but you can either use Google's backup service or simply download your apps and setup your Tab again after the reset. I don't backup, I just setup fresh as it means nothing from previous configs can sneak back in and my Tab with stock ICS is working great.

Ridiculous that a factory reset would be required.
    Absolutely ridiculous.

    Ah well.

I assume the applications I paid for can be re-installed without having to pay for them again?

There's other issues with Android / Samsung I have, this may be my last.
For example, I have to root the thing to update the /etc/hosts file? That's just braindead.

Hate to be such a downer, but this is just sloppy coding on their part.

Purchased apps can be re-downloaded from the Play Store.
A reset isn't really "required". As bfksc posted, it can often resolve issues you may have.
I've reset mine so many times I could probably do it in my sleep.

My suspicion is that there was a change in some configuration files and they simply did not have adequate migration code.

I don't know enough about Android to figure out what might be causing the hanging.
Desktop Linux system not a problem, but I would have to install additional utilities to track it down, and it would be easiest if I could ssh into the android to run them from my desktop while using the Android in a manner triggers the hangs.

Can anyone recommend an ssh daemon for Android?

I do have Better Terminal installed and busybox but I have not rooted it.

It looks like the ps from busybox doesn't have very many options, I may have to see if I can cross-compile the real one. I wanted to get into some android development, but this isn't the way I envisioned it ...
