Rogers haven't yet confirmed when they will release it. They just said that they would announce this when the generic upgrade is released

I feel a bit awkward asking, but does the term generic just mean unbranded code? As in if you root the phone you can upgrade the fw before getting it via the vendor?

No need to root the phone, but yes that's basically right. If you have a debranded phone (whether it came like that as stock or you did it yourself) then you will be able to update from SEUS as soon as the update is released, rather than waiting for your carrier to fiddle with it

you will know if you got the phone from them or got it from the provider if not then it is most likely unlocked or unbranded

Check if its branded or not by doing this:

At the key lock screen (where swipe action is - ensure you can see the swipe action),

Press "menu > back > back > menu > back > menu > menu > back"

MENU = 1st button
BACK = 3rd button

Then go:
Service menu>>Model Info

Mine comes up:
Model: x10
Country: United Kingdom
Brand: Vodafone
