2.1 Orange update verification error :(

HELP!

I am trying to update my 1.5 hero on Orange. I first need to update to the latest ROM .66 which I am trying to do. HTC Sync thinks my phone is connected to PC and I have downloaded the ROM upgrade from HTC.

When I run the upgrade it says it is Verifying the Information on my Phone.....then says it is not connected.

Can anyone suggest a reason for this as I really want to update to 2.1
