    1. Download the ROM file.
    2. Connect the PC with your HERO via USB
    3. Press volume button + POWER ON/OFF button on your phone, and it start in "safe mode"
    4. Choose "fastboot" option
    5. Start the ROM.exe file on your PC
    6. It will upgrade back your HERO

Okay I did as told, only when I re-update to 2.1 again, I get the very same error!
But, i pressed a key combo to check what the error is, it is as follows:
"E:Can't chown/mod /system/xbin (No such file or directory)
    E:Failure at line 1007: set_perm_recursive 0 2000 0755 0755 SYSTEM:xbin
    Installation aborted."

So this was indeed all that has to be done.
I wonder why this update caused this, they should halt the update.

I read that the upgrading to 2.1 stops at 75% for 15 minutes, "nothing happen" but after it finishing well...so don't think that the HERO is freeze, just be patient and wait

I have just now , on vacation in Thailand , with my Denmark registered HERO updated the phone here....
it stops at 75% for approx 5mins
thereafter it takes approx 5mins to complete-then it reboots to the htc brilliant screen , it sits there with the green bar at bottom for approx 5-7mins - then it open the simcard which took approx 1 1/2 min - thereafter phone is working with 2.1
it has kept all my programs!
Phone reacts very quick and nice!

Argh! (I even registered an account here just to whine about it, hi all!)

Not sure if my problem is related to slow downloads but it stuck at 0% for 20mins so I cancelled it. I have tried rebooting, taking of the battery, etc. but it is not offering me the upgrade again.
I have tried going to settings>About but I can't find anywhere to check for upgrades.
The HTC website has not provided a manual download link either.
Does anyone know how I can re-try the upgrade?

A friend of mine (With this problem) told me HTC support informed him that this problem (the /!\ problem after 2-3 attempts of re-upgrading from clean flash) only exists in Norway and Sweden (for untampered devices) - And that HTC is working on a solution.

If HTC is telling the truth (or does not know better) is unknown to me.

Check that phone memory is not fully utilized - there has to be at least 25MB free of phone memory for the upgrade - i had to delete approx 8mb and then install did start again and finally upgraded phone - i did not take out sd card or simcard....and it kept all my installed programs....

In one of my scenarious I reinstalled Android 1.5 and then tried the update to 2.1, my phone was then totally reset (after 1.5) so it cannot be memory problems...

same here, I checked and I had 150MB on my phones internal memory available.

I also tried with a second SD card, since HTC told me they thought it was a corrupt SD card. I don't think that that is true since the update also runs without SD card, so I don't think they are storing anything on the SD card (couldn't find any 80MB file on the SD card when the update was downloaded)

I'm getting the triangle when trying to get the first part of the update from T-mobile. It may not be officially out yet but I read on a Tmobile forum that putting the date forward triggers the first part of the update, and sure enough it does.

But it gets stuck on the yellow triangle. Phone is fine after a reboot but it obviously hasn't installed the update because if I fiddle with the date again it trys again.

I get the same Error with a german Hero! I have already formated my sdcard and run the update part 1 and 2 again, but failed...
I've tried to load an update.zip with the 2.1 version. It does some deleting and copying files and after 10minutes the same "E:Can't chown/mod /system/xbin (No such file or directory)
    E:Failure at line 1007: set_perm_recursive 0 2000 0755 0755 SYSTEM:xbin
    Installation aborted." error comes up!!!

EDIT: Anyone who solved this problem? if yes: how did you do it? :)

I don't think that there is a solution (yet) for the exclamation mark in the 2.1 update, but you should be able to restore it to the 1.5 ROM that can be downloaded from htc.com. Reboot the phone and install the update via USB.

I have the idea to create the missing /system/xbin folder!
but when i go into adb shell and try to create the folder with mkdir xbin i do not have the permission:

mkdir failed for xbin, Read-only file system

is there a way to create this folder in the system folder?

I had the same error, i.e. "E:Can't chown/mod /system/xbin (No such file or directory)
    E:Failure at line 1007: set_perm_recursive 0 2000 0755 0755 SYSTEM:xbin
Installation aborted.", but managed to fix it by creating the /system/xbin folder and putting an empty file there. Here's a guide. I DON'T TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU TRY THIS ON YOUR OWN PHONE!! THIS PROCEDURE WILL WIPE ALL DATA FROM YOUR PHONE (not the sdcard though)!!

    1) Go back to RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe by powering up the phone while holding the "back" button. When in fastboot mode plug in the USB and run the RUU exe.
    2) Install flashrec and backup your current recovery image (very important! Updates wont install with a custom recovery image) then replace the current recovery image with recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img. Follow this guide: http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click
    3) Reboot into the new recovery image by holding "home" while pressing the power button.
    4) Copy the recovery-backup.img to your computer (just to be sure you have it later on)
    5) Install android-sdk.
    6) Plug in the USB, open the command prompt and then run 'adb shell' in the tools folder of the sdk installation to start interactive mode.
    7) Now you'll be able to run these commands as root (thanks to booting with RA recovery image):
    mount -o rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
    mkdir -p /system/xbin
    touch /system/xbin/removeme
    chmod 755 /system/xbin
    chmod 664 /system/xbin/removeme
    exit
    8) Restart phone. Verify that /system/xbin folder is present and contains removeme file
    9) Restore original recovery image by using flashrec app. Just tap the "Restore Backup Image" button in flashrec.
    10) Install first update (youtube player stuff)
    11) Install second update (Android 2.1)

    Enjoy!

    Hope this helps!
