No this is a rumor that certain Motorola Droid users are getting the update. Read the article.

Doesn't matter now, I lost the poll! Yes, I said June. Put me down as overly optimistic. I'll try to get better.

So when do we vote on Gingerbread?

Well technically you weren't wrong. We did get 2.2 in June. You just have to root to get it.

The Droid will never be getting Gingerbread... that would be a pretty boring poll.

But it would be one that I could guess right.

Unless we get it from a clever dev. Getting it is getting it, right?

Considering that the (sprint) Hero just got 2.1 OTA, I would not say never for the DROID - Verizon may want users to buy new phones ASAP, but IMPNSHO it would be shooting itself in the foot if it were to abandon the DROID completely before its full 2 year life cycle were to come to a close.

Then again, it *is* VZW I am talkin about ....

Not if what we're hearing is true. The Droid doesn't have enough RAM and the processor can go over the minimum requirement of 1GHz but not at stock.

Android 3.0 Gingerbread to only be used in high-end devices? - AfterDawn

But considering the G1 can technically run Froyo, as stated by Google (they also said they had confidence that Cyanogen will port it over), I don't doubt that the Droid can run Gingerbread. We'll just be relying on Cyanogen. :)

Ahh, but see, if the OS can be written / ported in such a way that we can make use of the old Apps2SD trick in a new way, formatting the SDCard into multiple partitions that can then be seen by the OS as extensions of 'RAM' and / or 'ROM' space, then it will very easily be able to run Gingerbread.

However, it will indeed probably have to be a 3rd party release. Hopefully, by then, I'll have a super cool running 4 GHz device :D
