Well, this morning I went out to my balcony to grab a smoke with my coffee...and leaned over to put my cup of coffee on the ground. As I leaned over, my phone (which was in my hoodie pocket) fell to the ground (no more than a 2 foot drop). I didn't give it any though, just picked up the phone and placed it on my patio chair. When i grabbed it again, I realized the horror.
It looks like it hit just the right spot (bottom corner) to shatter it.

Looks like i'm gonna head over to the V store today.

    *End Rant.

    UPDATE:
So I got my replacement phone yesterday from Asurion ($100 deductible). The phone that I received was brand-spanking-new in the box, not a refurb like i was expecting. :D

Also, to answer AeroEngi's question; yes i had it in that same case when it fell (it's the plastic one with the kick-stand). The case actually "protected" the exterior corner of the phone when it hit, ironically, it also transferred all of the impact to the glass...so yeah, no scratch on the outside bezel  but a shattered screen .

This actually concerns me a bit; it seems that the razr either has very thin glass (.3mm or .7mm) or the design is esp poor at absorbing shock :(

Not 100% sure here but home owners might also cover the phone if you do not have dedicated insurance.

In my opinion it's not that surprising...

The Razr has a large surface area of glass like many of the new generation of Android smartphones. The body of the phone itself is shaped with a band of metal (which doesn't have a lot of "give" to absorb shock). The back of the case is a thin piece of kevlar which likely has more give than the rest of the phone.

This is one of the reasons why my Razr is kept in an Otterbox case. The injection molded plastic in the case should be able to help disperse some shock in the event of a fall.

Did you drop it while that case was on the phone? I only ask because I have the same case.

If it is the thin metal shell type case, it is only going to give you scratch protection. Zero impact protection.

It's the thin plastic case by Verizon with the built-in kickstand.

I always use the shiny silicone TPU covers, they seem to be a nice balance.

I'm using the thin Verizon kickstand case as well but I ALSO bought the insurance from Best Buy just in case something like this were to happen. I'll keep the insurance on for the next 6 months or so until the Razr goes down in price on Ebay and then I'll drop it and wing it from there. It probably just hit the thing just in the right spot to break it. Still wondering why they don't just make the screens out of some durable plastic with a scratch proof surface....seems with the tech today that surely there's got to be a glass like plastic that performs the same in clarity and scratch resistance and touch sensitivity.

OMIGOSH, this is awful and makes me want to cry! I usually don't get insurance --it's ridiculous to pay a high monthly fee when it used to be $0.99 and then still be responsible for a $50 deductable--when you can get a replacement on Ebay for about $100. Geez, I am seriously reconsidering my choice, even though I have a case and protector sheet encasing my lovely razr. I think I would die if this happened to me :(

That's the rub, there isn't it. Any plastic sufficiently hard enough (I'm not sure it exists), would shatter too. The hardest plastics I'm aware of are thermosets, like resin or epoxy based plastics, and they shatter just fine.

I don't trust my phone, or the case, for dropping. It would be nice if there was some science behind the protection--like does a screen protector help in a drop? Is silicone by itself better than silicone plus a hard shell?

All we have now its some idiot on YouTube dropping a phone on asphalt until it breaks.

Full coverage through Asurion is currently $6.99 with a $99 deductible and used ones on eBay look like they are going for about $400. I'll probably drop the Asurion insurance when the used price gets close to the $200 price range.

That may be the problem of a solid well built chasis that is built around the razr. Plastic I hear and is logical has some give. Thats why I always put panties on mine. Sorry man ouch.....

I agree with you. Why pay $6.99 a month for a year plus the $99 deductible which brings it to $183. Close enough to skip the insurance.

I remember the forum having a long discussion about the Razr and I tried to point out that due to the rigid design and fixed battery, naked drops would not be kind. Especially not corner drops. The shock energy has nothing to release it, so the display cracks easier than some other devices (my Incredible and G1 servived many drops).

Some designs have covers that pop off, helping to displace energy, but some like the Razr have nowhere to displace but the display. Factor in a bigger surface due to the 4.3" display and even more to the crack equation.

Which model of the Otterbox do you have? I'm definitely switching cases after this incident...I'm not gonna spend another $100 if this happens again.

You've said this several times; but the galaxy s1 (fascinate, vibrant) was not particularly fllimsy and seems to hold up quite a bit better - though it is 2 1/2 mm thicker. To be quite honest I would give up a couple of mm for a more durable device.

So much for being well informed. Gorilla Glass has never ever been advertised as unbreakable. It has always been advertised as scratch resistant.

To be scratch resistant it is hardened, hardened glass is more prone to shatter. It's a compromise. If they made the glass less prone to shattering, it would scratch easier.

It's just the luck of the draw, I threw my dx accidentally, it bounced and skittered glass side down on rough pavement and the glass didn't even scratch. No chips, breaks or anything. Then a few months ago I pulled it from my pocket and it had an inch long scratch. Presumably a grain of dust or sand in my pocket.
