I previously had 2.1 Captivate rooted to Froyo (no problem rooting or modding with this model) - the device sustained water damage and everything was wiped out (didn't have any of it backed up on a PC / dropbox, like I thought).

I received my warranty i897 ATT Captivate with 2.2 Froyo last week.
I cannot get past the bootloader failure when attempting to apply update.zip (various ROMs / updates renamed update.zip).

I've tried ODIN (did nothing but wipe the phone)
    I've tried Heimdal
I've tried oneclick, Z4root, loading from CWM Rom Manager

The phone is 'technically' rooted....however, you cannot apply any .zip files (ROM) or other updates. It sticks at
    Unfortunately, there are no other options during recovery but these;
    system recovery <3e>
    • reboot system now
    • reinstall packages
    • delete all user data
    • delete cache data
    • format internal sd-card

If I had more option available, I could side-step and replace the kernel that is forcing the signature.

I have spent the entire weekend researching this and every 'solution' offered here and on xda corrects the issue on stock 2.1 (not the latest stock 2.2 with vendor signature requirement).

All I need is how to get past the signature error / failure.

My understanding is with 2.2 update.zip no longer works as it 3e, you would need to flash a 2e kernal.

    Have a look here:

[GUIDE] How to Install a custom ROM - xda-developers

I think this might be what you are looking for.

You could also maybe use Rom Manager, I have read that this works as well:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418

Have not tried it so I cannot verify for you sorry.

    For rooting I used:

and had no issues what so ever.

    thanks for the definitive clarification.
Its non-help like this that makes trouble-shooting impossible.

Those links are basic 101. If I could flash a kernel from CWM I wouldn't be in this predicament (flashing w/ CWM reboots into recovery mode.....uh, this is exactly where I'm at in the OP)
So after reading that, you didn't think I would've thought to try the easiest method of flashing?
    What is this, Yahoo Answers?

amazing. You didn't try any of the above, yet you "had no issues whatsoever". Very helpful

simple and straight to the point ---- this is what you need. i had the same problem as you.

    [RECOVERY] 3e Recovery Modded w/ No Verification - xda-developers

this is a mod 3e, that skips the verification check. so youll be good to go.

A simple "Thanks but tried all that, not what I needed" would have been fine, instead of being a total dick about it! I am trying to learn as well. Hope you get your problem solved.
