The Evo supports 1xRTT for data in a non-3G area. That's the CDMA equivilent of "Edge." But if you're in a real weak signal area, or roaming constantly, you will drain your battery faster. And the more apps you have trying to access data in a weak signal area, the more battery drain you'll see. No real way around that other than turning data off completely.

I have yet to see solid evidence of being able to use 1x instead of 3g. We still don't have a full 3g blanket in my area, and when I go outside of the 3g towers, I have NO data connection, even with full bars.

I'm still laboring under the impression that 1xRTT _is_ 3g anyway.

    What is 1xRTT?

The EVO has a EVDO Rev A radio.

What is EVDO / Mobile Broadband? : EVDOinfo.com

    Maybe that's helpful, maybe not.
