Does the optical zoom apply itself automatically on all zoom ins or is there anything I have to do?

All you have to do is tap the '2X' icon next to the shutter button and the optical zoom kicks in.

Part of why I bought the device :) I need a great camera / recorder. It's done great so far! only a couple of complaints so far between it and the way the gallery itself functions but nothing I can't deal with.

Loving the 8 - it is a lot nicer than I expected. Slippery as junk though.
