I do tech support, and have fielded 3 calls so far from people who can't figure out why the siren and the bloopy music are playing.

They were sure it was my fault. It was Google's, and/or the users for making Google their home page or (even more confusingly) a "load in the background" second tab behind their home page.

Freaked more than a few people out.

Search pages should be quiet, as far as I'm concerned.

I agree, I like it when Google does things like this too, as they're usually pretty good. Also, it's clever marketing (as if they really need to do any though! ) Today I was in the park with some friends, and heard someone shout 'Oh my God yeah the Google logo thing was AWESOME!'. It gets people talking about them, and gives them a bit of personality.
