Hi, i read earlier today in another thread (unsure which im afraid) that you have to format on a computer, as the phone itself can't format any higher than 16gb, hope this helps

That sounds like a right muck up make a phone capable of using a 32gb card then make it awkward for people to use said card.

It may not be true, as i said found it in another thread and i dont really know anything about formatting etc! Just hoping that it does work, it would be horrible for OP to send all that money and it be a waste

just wondering if maybe the OP in the other thread had a bad card or perhaps a problem phone.
Then i always do a first format on my pc anyway, make sure any rouge viruses are destroyed before getting in the phone

32GB is the very maximum volume size for fat 32 format, and since the desire isn't a pc, i can understand it struggling

Saying that i can remember formatting an 80gb hard drive using fat 32 format, my old pc managed it & it was less powerful that the desire.
Be interesting when the 64gb cards finally come out

I've just got myself a brand new samsung 8gb class 6 card, the one from play.com. Do I have to format it into any special way? Fat32 etc? I'm not too clued up on that.

You need to format fat 32 if using your pc to format, if using the phone go to settings/sd & storage/unmount sd card/format sd card
