3G Speeds extremely disappointing?

For those of you that have purchased the Optimus V, how are your download speeds?

Using speedtest, I am getting an average of about 200-400kbps download speed. Running the test with full bars and a repeater on the roof of our building. Sometimes I hit about 800, but that is few and far between.

Running similar test with an actual Sprint phone, I am getting about 900+. USCellular, ATT etc all push over 1Mbps.

Does Virgin throttle their data? 300-400 seems pretty slow for a solid 3G phone.

One of the reasons I got this phone for the price was to use as a hotspot. Hotspot works well, however, with those speeds, it is almost not worth it.

Just ran the test again and I am under 100kbps per second.

Maybe I am expecting too much? Curious to hear your thoughts.

There's a thread at Howard with speed reports...I've seen people reporting up to 1800k, just depending on their location.

What are your Optimus V Speedtest.net results guys and gals?

At some point I'm going to tether a Sprint Treo 700p EvDo Rev. A phone I have, and then the V, from the same location back-to-back, but I don't expect to see any difference from what I've seen so far.

Those speed tests aren't too good though, the addition of the proxy server on Virgin kinda throws all the speed tests out the window. I do believe Virgin has some throttling going on in the evenings, either that or their proxy server gets slammed at this time. I have tested this by tethering and starting some torrents on my old Intercept. Every night around 6, I think it was 6, my torrents would drop to .01-.03 kbs. Around Midnight-1AM they would kick back up to about 10-20 each. I would run 2 of them at a time for these tests.

Now I have the Optimus V and wanted to test it out today with my downtime. So I threw 2 torrents on and one of them has averaged between 80 and 120 kbs and the other has been 10-40 kbs with only 12 connections to it.

This is an amazing difference, but when I run speedtest.net I still show speeds the same as the Intercept, around 500-1000. So I don't like the speedtest.net approach. As I said before, it's the proxy server that fouls up the speedtests. So I would recommend trying some real world tests if I were you guys.

oh, and before someone says something about me being a jerk for torrenting on the phone, read the post, I am using this as a real world test for speeds, not for downloading crap hollywood movies. lol.

You are right and I apologize. I will call Sprint and let them know what I was doing. Maybe I could offer to pay for the data that I was using to tether?

Or maybe, I will continue to use what I believe is one of the best values in wireless.

Thanks for your response. It really helped out with my original question.

anyways I don't think you should judge your data speeds by speedtest.com I don't think I've ever had an accurate reading from them.

    Tonight with 5-6 bars...

    I have to say, however, that I wasn't 750 miles away...more like 7.

Be happy. Some weekends when I test here, usually early - mid afternoon I've gotten less than 56kbps dialup rates...

my best so far has been 270kbps down and 350kbps up, which is really fscked as it's incredibly rare to see better down than up on any type of network that I've used...

so at the end of the day I just use WiFi unless I really need data for something as it's too incredibly slow(and frustrating) to do anything useful with...

Probably just start skipping topping it up and only do so when I really need it or around the day limit when they toss your #, 90d IIRC... I'm probably not even going to be able to use up all the minutes either, guess that I'll have to make some minute wasting calls somewhere...

I average about 800k-1mb down and 600-750k up. I don't use my phone much during the day anyways unless I'm texting. But when I get home I'm on it all night and I have wifi so I just use that. My girlfriend has verizon and her 3g speeds blow mine out of the water lol.

I just try to keep the thought that I'm only paying $25 a month in the back of my head :)

Here in central Illinois speeds are generally very crappy. usually around .2 to .5 with speedtest. sometimes early morning I can get .8 to .9 I think its just traffic. I live in a college town so once the students leave I'll be interested to see if that makes a difference. Like stated above we only pay $25 a month and probably have the lowest priority on the system.

Sprint-branded phones roam invisibly on Verizon, right? I'm guessing that's part of the issue.

At work, deep inside a building, I get 400k down, 100k up (1-2 bars). Around town, more like 800k-1M down, 300-400k up.

Works for me, but then I use tethering to supplement my home internet connection - not as a substitute.

What are you using to test the speed? Do you think Android Assistant drains the battery? I do the Quick Boost and also Cache Cleaner but I'm not sure it's beneficial. My battery really seems to be pooping out quickly. I'm still learning all about apps so I wonder if I should remove some to save battery life, although I don't have any games or even use it to play music. Also, this may be silly to ask but is 3G the only option or can I choose 2 or 1 somehow? Sorry for such elementary questions and thanks for your help.

In terms of data it seems fine to me. A little spotty at times but really quick. I am coming from a history of CDMA Rev 0, and Rev A is like a huge boost. Part of that may be processor

Just got my phone and the 3G seems OK so far. I was on Sprint before and its the same network.... it was never great, but never terrible either. Just mediocre I would say.
