4G LTE expansion

I have read a few post where someone purchased a Verizon 4G phone even without living in a 4G area. Many said they were told by a Verizon employee that they would have 4G "soon". I am well overdue for a new phone, but I know sales people will infer almost anything to get a sale. Is there anyway to get reliable info on Verizon's 4G LTE expansion?

Thanks. End of 2013 seems a ways off. Not worth getting a 4G phone for myself right now in my opinion.
