Charging cable MUST be Samsung-branded, or doesn't matter?

As long as it's micro USB then it will work. If the charger outputs a lower current than the Samsung charger then it might take longer but that's it.

I know it has the micro usb charger. I was just more concerned about the adapter that plugs in the wall. Is that the exact same wattage and power of the S3 charger?

standard USB voltage. your not going to find anything using the USB protocol to use different voltages. just fyi they make USB electrical sockets now a days.

I don't know if all the chargers are the same but mine is a combined Mains/USB charger so by definition it is supplying the same amount of juice a USB cable supplies. If your charger fits the Galaxy S2 it fits the S3.

Thank goodness. If I can use the chargers that I now use for my Incredible - it will be the first time ever that I didn't have to go out and buy new chargers. I don't even have the phone yet and I already love it.

There's only one difference with my charger and that is the USB wire is thicker - my guess is that is USB 3.0 compatible. The plastic mount around the input jack is more substantial too, but thsts a good thing - I used to have a Sony Ericsson Satio with one of those awful 2 pronged plastic inputs which always dropped to bits!

same reason I hated Motorola phones/chargers for so many years

Samsung indicates in the user manual/get started guide (can't recall which) that it's important to use only Samsung-branded cables and chargers. This seems like standard "buy our stuff only" advertising. An aftermarket cable will work fine, right?

This reminds me - I'm so happy that manufactures FINALLY started using the same connections for chargers. It was so annoying having to buy all new chargers every time I got a new phone.

Yup, any usb > micro usb cable will do.

I actually have two micro usb cable splitters so I can charge two phones (at home) or my phone and ereader (at work) at the same time off one wall charger & cable.

Only really applies to data transfer, not charging. And then your other device (pc, mac lor laptop) would also need to have usb 3 to get the speed out of it.

Yes, but of course if your PC is USB 3.0 equipped and you only use a USB 2.0 cable you only get the 2.0 transfer speed. The cable on my GS3 is twice as thick as the old style cable which indicates it is probably USB 3.0

What about using an apple charger (wall socket plug) and running the cable from the plug to your phone?

I noticed that its a faster charge.. Will it ruin my battery?

Possibly, possibly not, just compare the ampage stats on the wall plugs, the Samsung should be 1 amp

That is not so.

I have some cables that do not work while others do. It does not have to be a Samsung cable but it is "possible" it will not charge with "some" generics.

Hmm weird, I never had any issues with generic cables.

From regular USB to USB cables for hard drives, other accesories
From USB to micro USB for smaller accessories and cell phones

The list goes on. I tend to lose a lot of cables, especially when I was in the Army, so I stocked up on cables, buying the cheap $1 chinese brands. Never had an issue :D
