My wifi's broken and I sense it'll be a while before I get it up and running again. Does anyone here know a good website from where I can download applications in the apk format? Coz then I can use the SDK to install them on my phone.

    Thanks

I don't get it. I'm not talking about illegally pirating apps. There are thousands of free and open source apps and I just want a non market way to put em on my phone.
I'm sorry if that too is against the rules. In that case I'll take down the thread
    Peace.

How come people immediately think you are talking about pirated apps when you are asking a simple question.

99% of the time, that's what is being asked for. Since that's not the case, continue on.

But, as a reminder, please be sure that all recommendations are LEGAL and in compliance with forum rules and guidelines. :)

People assume you are asking for pirated apps because that's exactly what it sounds like you are asking for without directly saying it.

Just curious, what is wrong with getting them from the android market? You say your wifi is broken, but why can't you just use the mobile network?

The site you suggested is almost entirely pirated apps. You may want to read Kelmar's post that is 2 above yours.

    This and that.
    Here
I'll repeat what I just have in a PM I've received about getting an infraction...

You either allow such threads or you don't, and as a site moderator ok'd it, as I've already said, it's ridiculous that you then give members "infractions" for posting suggestions.

And the irony is I was going to report the thread until I had seen a moderator ok it.

You will also notice that that same moderator pointed out that all links should be legal and follow the forum rules. Since the suggestion you provided violated the specific rule he was referring to, an infraction would be logical.

    This and that.
    Here
The site posted contained free apps too, and it's suggested to make a donation for the paid apps you may download to support the dev who created it. The majority of the suggestions that could be made for threads like this are going to break the rules, which is why I don't understand why it's been allowed to remain.

Here in India Mobile network GPRS is very expensive. Plus we still don't have the 3G spectrum on all service providers, including mine. So it's real slow too. I do use my carrier's network for things like google maps, but downloading apps everyday is not feasible.

I hadn't/haven't checked into the other links as I was at work when I responded. I HAD, however, left myself a note to follow up on it! :)

    Agreed.

GetJar - Appsolutely Everything for Nokia, BlackBerry, Android, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG, Palm. would be a great example of a LEGAL and appropriate place to download apps from a NON market source. Likewise, LauncherPro would be a place to get Launcher Pro.

There are PLENTY of these sites around that are LEGAL and LEGIT. While yes, a LARGE portion of these threads are asking for ways to illegally obtain paid apps; some of them, such as this one, had not reached that point.

The irony of it all is that if we HAD closed the thread, the moderators hear "the mods are being too strict and it's not fair and... complaint, complaint, complaint" If we don't close the thread we hear "the moderators aren't doing their jobs and people can get away with murder here and...complaint, complaint, complaint." Regardless of what we do, people will always hate us and think we are doing the wrong thing (despite the fact that we have guidelines given to us on what is/isn't allowed).

When in doubt, shoot one of us a PM prior to posting it and we'll let you know if we suspect a problem with it. :)

Good to know. If I recall correctly, AppBrain Android Market - find the best Android Apps and Games has a way to download the apps from their website. I have never personally used this method and have ZERO idea of what it entails (or if that's truly the case) though.

Perhaps someone more familiar with this could chime in?

you just go to Appbrain website and select an app and click on install. Find another app and click install. and so on and so on. BUT you still have to download them to your phone with the Appbrain app. You just open Appbrain on your phone and hit sync, the apps you selected on the website will be automatically downloaded, so in the end you are still using data or wi-fi on your phone
