One question: sometimes I wipe cache and dalvik cache before restoring a Nandroid. Do I need to? Or can I just restore back?

It really is not necessary to do so as restoring will write back bit to bit. However it does not hurt anything to do so

Yeah when you restore a partition, it's formatted prior to restoring your data. No need to wipe anything prior to restoring. Akazabam explained it all in a post awhile back. It went to a lot more detail than my post, but that was his explanation in a nutshell.
