Root A question about rooting.

Hey, I'm pretty knew to all this but iv looked around the forums and not seen anything about this. I want to know about rooting my 3 mobile HTC desire, but I also want to know whether it permanently voids my warranty. Also, if I get insurance on it, will it void that?

Does rooting void your warranty?

rooting your 3 device is no different to any other

officially it voids warrantee although some people have got away with it
3 have not leaked a recent RUU other than an original so if you are on official 3 firmware and not one of the unbranded devices they were selling when they ran out of stock then there is not currently a way to return to 3 stock RUU for warrantee purposes

if however its unbranded 100% htc stock then you are a lucky person and have many choices

And as for rastaman, i got my desire when they ran out of stock. It has no marks on the exterior and so I am led to believe that it is unbranded. Can anyone clarify this? Also do you know if having it on contract is any different?

To find out, go to Settings>About phone>Software information

If the software version is x.xx.405.x then it's unbranded. If it's x.xx 771.x then it's branded (3 UK)

It's 771, so I probably shouldn't root it?

well if you dont RUU it to a higher version then you can root
you currently run original 3 2.1. there is this version on shipped-roms
1.20.771.3

Could you explain a little more? RUI? Also is that a link to the software I am on now? So if I do root I could reinstall that?

RUU is what that link is, its HTC's rom flasher, it will restore your device to factory completely including removing root
if you rooted you could use this to return however if you flashed a newer rom or RUU you might not be able to return back to this easily.
Its worth making a goldcard as you would be able to downgrade the firmware and flash the old RUU if you ran into problems

Shipped ROMs
