General A500 as a standard GPS

    Can My A500 act as a standard GPS unit or does it need a wifi connection to function as a GPS?

    Yes it can, it does not need WiFi.

    Gaia GPS, in the market, allows you to download maps for offline use. It does use topographical maps, which I prefer.
