About to get a new Hero

I ordered my Hero last week through Sprint.com and it's coming tomorrow. I ordered it with a new number because my Verizon contract doesn't end until 11/21. I don't want to activate the phone yet because I can't justify paying for two cell phone contracts at once especially if I still have to use my old one. Can I at least turn on my phone and play with it and get used to the OS without actually activating it? Thanks!
