I just found out that AT&T has failed to renew its contract with CBS and as a result, on the 20th, DirecTV, AT&T U-Verse, and DirecTV Now will cease airing CBS and CW (which it owns) in many major markets.

If you're a customer--or even if you're not, but just want to help--please read about it and use the contact methods on this page. Quickly! :)

ETA I just found out about Locast, which is available as an Android app and as a new DirecTV app. The latter method lets you watch your local channels on TV, the way I like!

Does this mean no more Game of Thrones or something does it?

  3. No GoT was on HBO and it's over anyway.
They will settle either at the last minute or after a short interruption, they always do. Besides, CBS and CW are over-the-air channels that can be received for free with an antenna as long as you're in range of the local transmitters.

True...but I haven't had an antenna in decades. I've had DirecTV since 1993, and that was after years of cable.

Honestly, I'm not inclined to buy--and have installed--an antenna for what will [hopefully] be a short break from CBS/CW. Now that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has ended its run, I never watch CW, and I can live without the few things I watch on CBS.

  5. It's not a bad idea in general to have an antenna to receive OTA signals as a backup to cable/satellite for when it goes down, so at least you'll be able to watch something.
Depending on where you're located you may not need an antenna installed on your roof, an indoor one may suffice. Check out this site to get a better idea-

That would've been nice all those times tornadoes and torrential downpours 'rain faded' my DirecTV signal in Dallas.

Luckily, I've been back home in beautiful, sunny, Southern California for 13 years--and it's gone out exactly...ZERO times! :)
It would definitely have to be the roof kind. Because of my proximity to the San Gabriel Mountains, there's pretty much no OTA signal. Ditto for cell coverage. :(

On NextDoor--where you're dealing strictly with verified residents of your neighborhood--any time a phone-related issue comes up, like robocalls, virtually EVERYONE in the thread has a landline. Including me. :D

Ditch them all and switch to Playstation Vue. I did 2 years ago and never looked back. And you do NOT need a Playstation for it to work. Just a streaming stick.

    Nah, I'll pass! :)

I love everything about DirecTV, from its 100% uptime, to its channel selection, to its picture quality, to its customer service, it just rocks. With On Demand and pay-per-view movies, there's more to watch than I could manage in a lifetime. :D

Oh well, think that shows how much interest I have in mainstream TV these days, which is not a lot.

If you're a long-time customer, do what I did: call DirecTV, immediately ask for the retention/loyalty department, then start pleading your case. I was armed with facts and figures of other services to refer to. I said that if they couldn't dramatically reduce my bill (without removing anything), I would cut the cord. I pointed out my LONG history as a customer, and referred to other viewing options, including Amazon Prime.

The magic words, which I'm convinced one MUST say, are 'cut the cord.' They found an assortment of specials/discounts/whatever, that lowered my bill--I kid you not--by $100/month. For a year. When the year was up, I repeated the process; this time it wasn't as great, only a $60 reduction, but still.
I had Prime since its inception--until I canceled it in April. I believe I posted a thread about it at the time...
You're right, all around. I'm not fretting, though; I expect any break to be brief, and I can live without the few things I watch on CBS until then.
Fun, right? ;) Don't get me wrong--I LOVE my view of the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains...but it comes with a price. *shrug*

I used to watch CBS and CW back then before they where stranger-then-my-wet-sock's comedy, but I never watch them any time soon. I used to be a direct tv customer like back in highschool, that was around 1993s too, had all the movies and all the shows I loved back then. But things have changed now, switching gears to primarly to AMC, FX networks, CN, Nick every once a while, and Starz movies too.

Still not going to cut the cord for a bit though, must have my shows and Sirius XM too.

I think CBS is Blueblood - but that show ended with that, my Mother and her boyfriend stop in all the time when they are not too busy and just watch CSI and other shows too. They are getting heavy into House too.

Well, what do you know? It's the 20th--and we have no CBS!

I guess we'll see who holds out longer...
