Add Shortcut to Home screen

I have a Motorola 5gs Plus phone with Android 8.1.

I'm trying to add a chortcut on the home screen to a document.

I have read several posts that supposedly describe the process. In addition, some posts recommend installing and using ES File Explorer. I've tried all of these suggstions but none work.

All methods have a common thread....
-navigate to the desired file
-long press the file
-open options menu
-click add shortcut
(the choices vary slightly from method to method)

When I follow these instructions, I don't see an option that says "add shortcut"

For example the native Android choices are:
-Open with
-Select all
-Copy to...
-Move to...
-Compress
-Rename

Can anyone direct me to a method that works?

ES File Explorer hasn't been recommended for awhile. Both these file apps have the option to add a shortcut on the home screen, steps are similar to what you wrote.

File Shortcut [V2] is also very good. I used to use the original version from a recommendation, and V2 seems as good. Just Share any file to File Shortcut, rather than try to use the app's entry field page.. er thing. You can create individual icons or standard PDF, Word icons etc.
