So I finally had to give in and get a smartphone, since it's not possible to buy a decent candybar phone anymore. I switched to a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini from a SE Elm candybar phone.

Biggest issue: horrible virtual keyboard. But the T9 is close to as good as what I've been used to except for one thing:

How do you add words to the T9 dictionary on an android phone? Could really be true that it's not possible?!

    Thanks

    Martin

It depends on the keyboard you are using. Android allows the user to change the keyboard to one that he likes. There are several on the market, like Go Keyboard, Swiftkey, Touchpal, etc. They allow you to edit the keyboard dictionary.

My Samsung Galaxy S also allows me to add new words to the XT9 dictionary. On my phone, simply type the word you want, then in the suggestion field, tap the word you want to save, then its automatically saved to your dictionary.

I however use the Swype keyboard. It also works for tapping anyway.

They're pretty much all but extinct now, or at least a very much endangered species. There's a few poor quality cheapo candybar phones still around.

BTW was in the local China Mobile flagship store recently, must have been at least 95% of the phones they had on show were Android. Very few basic candybar phones to be seen.

I've tried a lot of different keyboards including those you mention.

My problem is that I like to use the 3x4 (T9 and not XT9 I guess, but perhaps they're using the same dictionary) style keyboard, since it's a lot more precise and quicker. When using that keyboard there's no way to manually spell a word like there is on all the candybar phones in the world.

Depends on the user. I'm quicker swiping than typing on either qwerty or 3x4 keyboards. You have to manually add words if you want to use that dictionary for the 3x4. You have to go to settings>keyboard>samsung keyboard>my words.

Anyway, it took a bit of getting used to, but I found the qwerty keyboard faster and more precise than the 3x4. You've been just too used to the old 3x4 style keyboard.

As for swiping, here's a video about it:
