when Samsung moved to having a MicroSD and SIM slots on the side .. at first they used hatch like access one could open

now they moved to iPhone like hatch that you need to stick a pin into
    why?

i have some ideas .. but i am curious to hear what you think & know ..

looking forward to an interesting discussion .. thank you

Mostly I think its because of the aesthetic. A plastic flap on the aluminum edging won't look good.

Then again there's the function part where the flap is too easy to open, allowing dirt inside more easily, not to mention water. If the flap was not closed properly, the water resistance is compromised. And those flaps are prone to get broken.

Sure... it is probably easier to open the flaps but it's also easier to break them.
Also, I don't think people would be swapping sim cards or micro-sd cards many times.

Many phones are like that now, certainly the metal unibody ones.
