Advice for International calling?

I will be traveling to Australia and I'm afraid of the long distant roaming charges that incur with mobile phone usage.
Any tips or advice I can utilize to bypass charges?

Is it possible to disable the phones cellular connectivity yet make a call through Skype via Wifi if I'm in a hot spot?

How would this work?

thanks for any ideas

Jeff

I believe if you have the Skype app installed you don't have to disable the cellular connection to use Skype. As to how well it will work, you can test that here by going to a local hot spot. I haven't used Skype on my phone, but I can assure you the international roaming charges will eat you alive.

Thanks tukatz,

So there's basically no way to avoid roaming charges?.. other than not using the phone at all.

I believe it is possible to purchase international calling from T-Mobile. That helps control the cost. Theoretically calling over Wi-Fi would do the trick, but you have to have a connection to validate that you have that feature. Or at least that was my experience in Canada.
