Hi all, can anyone tell me whether theres an alarm app (or any alternative) that works to wake me up even if i've turned off the power on the phone?
i.e., one that makes the phone turn on then make a loud ringing sound!?

    Cheers

Nope. The clue is in the phrase "powered OFF". However, what I do when I want to use the phone as an alarm is to a) ensure the alarm is set to 'sound' even when the phone is set to 'silent', b) set the phone to 'silent' and c) set it into 'airplane' mode. That way the phone does nothing until the alarm goes off. And in airplane mode it also uses b*gg3r all battery. Simples!

You had a phone that could be powered off and it would turn itself on and wake you up like a clock? Really? I'd like to know what phone that was.

I thought the original post was some kind of joke when I first read it. Now there are great apps that put your phone into a sleep-like mode and can be configured to only allow certain callers or texters to get through (or none) and then turn on at the correct time and wake you. But work from being powered off? I call BS.

if your old phone did this, it wasn't truly off. no power = no possibility of the phone doing anything until you turn it back on (manually)

Older blackberry phones had a feature to do that. They would power down until an alarm time or a specified time.

But that's just it - the BB was going into a standby mode rather than truly powered down.

Agreed. Without getting a modicum of power, how would it otherwise know when to "power up"?

I'm with Philcoo. I had a Nokia and I loved that I could turn it OFF and I could have the alarm go. (No, not Standby; it was Off.) When I came to Android, I was surprised that such a simple thing was not available.

I don't mean to sound argumentative, but could you remove the battery and still see the alarm function? Because with Android handsets, that's the "level of off" that's built into them. It's "off" in the true sense of the word.

I've seen this topic of discussion pop-up many, many times. Not having owned a Nokia or Blackberry, isn't it possible that the Alarm function was a totally separate feature, independent of the rest of the O/S, yet, be powered by the same battery?

This would actually be a cool feature to have on Android devices, especially for those of us who have a hard time putting our phones to rest for the night, giving the phone & the user a much needed break from being connected at the end of the day. A deterrent/time-out from our phones,if you will, yet, have the alarm function available.

People in this thread are being super uptight. No I don't know of an application that will turn your phone back on for an alarm, but it's not a ridiculous premise.

This was my last phone. An LG Quantum running Windows Mobile OS 7. Out of the box, it was able to turn your phone on from a full discharge right before the alarm was to go off so you wouldn't miss it. I know a lot of other phones that do this, including most Blackberry devices.

    Be nice to the OP

The difference being, the alarm in Nokia phones and BB's are separate from the OS. It operates on a second battery inside the phone, from the CMOS battery itself, not the battery used to power the phone. One of the main things you can see by having the CMOS working is that when you turn off the phone, then turn it on again after an hour, you would see that the time moved, and you don't have to set it. It can't be done on Android phones using an app because this is AFAIK done on a BIOS level basis. In Nokias and BBs where the CMOS battery is broken, the alarm from off function does not work.

I know I'm resurrecting this thread, but out of curiosity I did a bit of web searching and it seems that the BlackBerry Z10's alarm also doesn't work if you turn the phone off.

I had a Blackberry phone several years ago with this feature, I used the alarm to wake up for work at 4:30am. I switched to a new phone, pulled the SIM out of my Blackberry, put it in my new phone and stuck the BB in a drawer.

The next morning, which happened to be a Saturday, the alarm I had set on my Blackberry went off. I stumbled out of bed and dug it out of the drawer, but since there was no SIM in the phone it was locked and I had no way to turn the alarm off. By this point my half-asleep wife was yelling at me to shut it off, so I yanked the battery and threw it back into the drawer.

So for that Blackberry, at least, the battery needs to be in for the alarm to work.

I had an LG PM 325 back in 2006 or so which had this feature. I would turn off the phone at night to charge and the alarm would go off. I had another phone with the same feature but I can't remember it. And if you look up the 325 you will see it was a girlie phone. It was my first official cell and I needed bluetooth so don't laugh.

The alarm on a LG L7 (P705G) a $200 phone, will go off when the phone is powered off, but it won't on a $500 Lg nexus 4... not sure if its a hardware or software issue, regardless the nexus 4 should have this feature.

The standard alarm that came installed on my HTC One always turns the phone on when the alarm goes off. That is a feature that only a previous Blackberry could do. My iPhone alarm did not do this either. But with the HTC One alarm, I can turn off the phone, and it will turn itself on at the alarm time I set.

I have three recent-ish Nokia Feature phones all of which will turn themselves on and alarm - from "off". I too was surprised a few days ago that my new Android phone doesn't do this.

All of these saying that you had a old phone that did this:

Remove the battery and see if it does this.
