I have read that the update to kitkat turns them all white. Did you get an update?

I am not sure but I don't think that you can. Someone else may be able to help.

Only by rooting and using something that alters your notification area's icons. Personally I currently use Wanam xposed with the xposed framework. When rooted with a custom recovery you can also install individual mods that work as well.

I'm still on 4.3 (Jelly Bean) stock rooted firmware, I'm not sure if my set up would work on 4.4 (KitKat)

I have not tried different launchers with Kitkat but maybe that could change the icons to other colours.
Personally I would rather the coloured icons also, they looked better in my view.

    I'm still on 4.3
My icons are white with the exception of the battery so it couldn't be KitKat.

On Kitkat everything is white, the battery, Wifi activity etc, all of it.
On 4.3 the battery is green and wifi changes colours too.

As mentioned above, Google changed the color scheme with 4.4 KitKat. All icons and text in the notification bar are white.

I've included a picture from my nexus 5 below for a visual

I have the vzw note 3. Wifi icon has always been white and nothing else. It does have colored arrows just like 4G but the icons for each are white. In my Motorola the wifi turns blue when connected to google but not in Note 3 4.3
