I've been thinking about getting a Galaxy Tab for a while now, and after playing with one that my uncle just recently bought, I've decided to go ahead and get it.

But, after pricing it on Verizon.com, I'm not too thrilled about the data rates.
I've pretty much come to the conclusion that I will be paying $25/month ($20/month for 1GB, and $5 for 250 texts)

But when I reach that 1GB limit, can I tether to my Ally through Wifi?
I know some people have tried to connect Nintendo DS to them, with no luck. Would the Tab be the same way?
If not, I don't guess I'll be getting a tab anytime soon, as I simply can't afford paying for pretty much another phone line.

i bought a Nook Color and rooted it with the preview SDK of honeycomb, the only reason i rooted my Ally was so i could tether it with WiFi, and it works well, sometimes it's faster then my WiFi at home other times it's slower, depends on the day.

No extra data plan cost to VZW since i'm already paying for unlimited data with the Ally.

I also tether my rooted Nookcolor. As far as a Galaxy Tab connecting to the Ally, it may or may not work. I think it has to be able to connect to an ad-hoc network for it to work.

You can. I do this currently myself. However..... Galaxy Tab does not support AdHoc Access Points, only Infrastructure. Which is not an issue if you are running Velocity. But if it is stock with root and an app that runs in AdHoc Mode you will need modify the Galaxy tab with an updated wpa_supplicant binary.

I've decided against the Verizon one, seeing as I currently can't afford even the cheapest monthly bill.

However, I have found a FANTASTICALLY priced WiFi-Only one, and I do plan on buying that soon.

That's manufacturers price. I was looking at this as well. For $125 less I bought a Nook Color. I'm running Gingerbread with a modified Cyanogen Mod 7 ROM. The Nook has the same cpu as the Galaxy and tests I've seen out performs the Galaxy. It's been over clocked as high as 1.3GHz.
The only thing I loose is web cam. And it tethers easily with my Ally.

I've just never been a fan of the way the Nook Color looks.
I prefer the shape/overall look of the Galaxy.
