I would like to untick this but I am not sure how this will affect my IMAP account in K9. I need to be notified when emails come in right away as per I am in the desktop support business. Does anyone know how that would work? I know it turns of 3G after the screen is powered off but will my emails still come in after 3Gis off???

My Evo is on 24/7 with Exchange and Everyone.net running. Other than resetting the device once a day due to the horrendous Bluetrash implementation, it is never off.

Yes but do you have the "always on mobile" checked or unchecked and if it is checked do you still get email notifications after the 3g radio is off?

No. You will not receive email if you have no data connection.
