    I am about to receive my first android phone in the mail from AT&T - the Xperia X10....it comes with 1.6 and there are updates available to Froyo...but what does it really buy me? Can I get away with just using the 1.6 OS installed? I plan on downloading some apps and using the camera and video heavily, but not too much else. Coments appreciated!:rolleyes:

    im going to go out on a limb and say "you wont like it." 1.6 (Donut) to 2.1 (Froyo) is a pretty big step. You are going to get a lot of new features that you wont have if you decide not to upgrade.

    I would suggest going into the forum for that device and reading some of the experiences people had with the upgrade. U will likely get some concrete answers here as well tho.

    With Froyo 2.2, you will get a lot of bug fixes, a different user interface, flash, hug speed improvements, javascript engine, and pobably wifi hotspot tethering option

    I went from 1.6 on the G1 to 2.2 on the G2x. Its a much more complete experience.

    Um there will be access to more apps if you update, although there are plenty that'll work on older os versions. Honestly yes you can get away with it, but I say update anyway for the purpose of apps not opening themselves up/staying open, as well as the improved battery life of 2.2

    Not so true, if the dev decides to include part of any api after 1.6 you can not use those apps. Not to mention to op would be hounded to update until they did. I see no reason why someone wouldn't update

    The better question is, why would you not update????

    It doesn't cost anything, offers a lot of improvements including free google maps navigation, and the more current your OS the more likely that apps will work on your phone

    The advantage of staying with 1.6 - you don't have to take 5 min to download the update and restart your phone

    Sounds like a no brainer to me

    I'm saying that there are apps that will work on 1.6. Enough so that a person new to android will have plenty to kill time. Most of us have work/school/families etc where we dont sit on our phones tinkering with apps/games for hours on end.

    Version 1.6 is not that exciting... I'd go for a newer phone with Froyo at least, if not Gingerbread.

    Good lord. Seriously?

    1.6 = ancient.
    2.1 = barely acceptable
    2.2 = decent Android experience
    2.3 = polished Android experience

    Do you really want to stay at 1.6???? While you're at it, how is that Windows ME still working for ya?

    Hell, the fact that they are still selling phones with lower than 2.2.1 is lunacy

    The manafacturers should help get CM running on these phones and push the link to it to the phones :D
