I have a NEXUS 4 mobile (previously running Android 4.2.2) with a monthly prepaid carrier within australia TPG.

Last week I received a notification saying that the new Android OS 4.3 was available to install. It had already been downloaded to my phone via my 3G Network using almost all my bandwith for the month 180MB out of my 250MB.

I do not have WiFi at home and rely on my 3G data.
Looking through the settings on my phone there is nowhere to decide how OS updates are installed onto your phone, there is nothing like way the play store "Update with WIFI only". I was not given an option or even notified that a new update was available, it was simply downloaded to my phone.

There is nothing I can do this month but I dont want this happening again as it will be very very expensive when the next android update is released.

Im not a fan of Apple but one thing that they do well is ensure that any updates to be installed to your phone require a WiFi connection. I dont even want that, all I want is the ability to select how updates are installed to my phone.

Has anyone else had this issue and how do I control how OS updates are downloaded to my phone?

Unfortunately, I'm not sure you can :(

What you might be able to do is, when you know an update is about to be released, keep an eye on the OS updates screen: usually, updates are initially available as WiFi only for a few days before they're available OTA.

When you spot that an update is available WiFi only, you could find somewhere with free WiFi (coffee shops, maybe) and download it.

Not a perfect solution, but the only alternative would be to root the phone and control your updating that way, I guess.

I've moved this into the nexus 4 forum so people with better knowledge are able to help you with this :)

    Cheers

The easiest way to block the update is to disable to the Google Services Framework. However, that carries a heavy penalty of disabling all Google Services including the play store. You could do this until you do get to a free wifi zone, or you get to a computer with internet that would allow you to install the update manually.
