    Hi all,

I am seriously wanting to switch to android as I am quite bored of Iphone. The only thing that kept me from switching is Facetime.

I have Deaf family and friends that I regular communicate via facetime.

The only thing I can think of is having android phone and keep my iphone 4 and use tethering option but I can imagine it would be battery killer.

Other option is to have pay to go sim card for the iphone...

    Does anyone have another idea?

Use Skype. It is free video calling and IM for all and cross-platform.

Unlike facetime which is locked behind a closed-walled-garden called apple.

Google talk, there isn't an app for those with iPhones that you would be talking with but I believe the website will work ok. You also have skype or tango

Thanks guys, I got ipad and mac lap top. Webcam communication is the primary use for me as a Deaf person.

I have tried Tango but the quality doest seem to good as FaceTime

Both Skype and gTalk are terrible when compared to Facetime. It's the ONLY thing I preferred on my iOS devices. I really like Android but Google has to step up and fix gTalk. I have a SG3 and Nexus 7. I keep my iPad around just to use Facetime. Since Microsoft bought Skype I doubt it's ever going to work well on non MS platforms.

What's really odd is the video chat on Google Hangouts works better than gTalk. If you had to use one I would try GH.

Have you tried Google+ ? One of its many features is Video Hangouts. Works great cross platform (Android, iOS, PC, etc) and completely free.

I use Google Talk on my GS3 to video chat with my wife on her iPhone. The iPhone equivalent is VTalk. It works quite well.

How about Tango. Works with wifi, 3g, and 4g.

I think Gtalk is peer-to-peer, while Hangouts uses a different protocol, so the quality and latency is better. It's a more modern implementation, while Gtalk is kind of leftover from the IM era. It's not bad as a fallback though.
