My wife's name is Marilyn. Not Maryland. No, I don't want to send a text to the state of Maryland. Or call the state. :0)

Is there a way to "train" Android to associate a certain spoken word with a certain result?

Oh, and it can't get "U2" or "REM" right either! I have been messing around with the new voice commands (after downloading the app and widget replacement), and I figured these would be popular enough (although oddly spelled) to be configured in. It got the Beatles, though!

good question. mine's name is Cayce, which it understands, but spells it wrong everytime. I would like to train it to spell it correctly.

    I lol'd.

But I don't know. Can you try saying your wife's name very clearly? You could always try taking it to a Verizon store or to Best Buy.

Heh, wait until you get to "weird" names like Shaneh. That's pronounced Shay-na.

Why do you call your wife by her name? That's why android is confused

Honestly, if no one on an android forum knows, I'd bet real money they won't at VZW or BB.

I'm often amazed and sometimes bewildered at it's speech recognition.
'What are you doing tonight' translated into 'jaguar firefight' but it understood 'navigate to ikea' perfectly in a noisy car..

A jaguar firefight is far more exciting than anything anyone could possibly be doing tonight anyway.

Just put her contact under "Hot Piece of Ass."

"Navigate to Hot Piece of Ass."

    See? Works perfectly

You could always change your wifes name in contacts to "Maryland". Not the answer that your looking for, but it would work.

I usually have mine set as "babe". No issues there and it always calls the right person. ;)

You can also go to all of the above mentioned females, parents house and smack them in the head for trying to be clever with the spelling of their new born baby girls names. Or buy said parents a Droid and let them experience the frustration. :p

I find that if I exaggerate names it recognizes them.

Oh, I have tried pronouncing it various different ways, but it just won't get it! I love the HPOA idea!! (my wife would even approve!), but then it would not sync with Facebook pictures, etc.

I know with Dragon Dictate, you could "program" a certain pronunciation to a spelling and override its own attempts to figure it out. That would solve the problem no matter HOW weird the spelling was!

Kinda off topic, but facebook will still sync if she has her email or phone number on her facebook page. I have a couple people in my phonebook under nicknames, but facebook still synced with them.

Oh, that is very interesting . . . Maybe HPOA it is! :0) (or "babe" or "honey", etc).

Vlingo keyboard is now free in the market ... and you can set it for your default speech engine and then use what ever keyboard you like. I think it works much better but your results may vary :)
